Any PhD Bros in here? Just wondering how you are managing your time and meals. It's hard for me but I'm making it work. Pic related, cell and molec biology PhD here.
Grad school
what are your tips? I'm entering into my first year next fall.
Mastering out was a great decision. Last year I was finishing up two papers while working as a paid TA. 20 hour work weeks while getting paid the same as I was as a grad student.
Unless you have a clear end goal in mind (which I admit I didn't) then grad school is shit. Long hours, low pay, and it ain't like your job prospects improve afterwards. Unless you like high stress jobs
I work as an American graduate assistant. Want to know something amazing? I can feel it in my HEART.
I started work at 5:00AM today. I was able to perform 10 tissue culture assays, purify three proteins, test 7 pre-clinical drugs, prepare 50L of bacterial media, AND write half of a research grant application today. I find problems in experimental design that paid professionals often miss. Even if it's helping the post-doc who is supposed to know what he's doing, I never hesitate for the good of science.
I get paid $18k/yr, USD. Yeah, laugh all you want, you trade school jerks. "Muh opportunity cost", big deal. So you make $60k/yr plumbing from 18-30 while I break even with nothing to my name after undergrad loans are considered. WHO FUCKING CARES. Once I graduate, and then finish my post-doc at 35, I'll be able to find a job ANYWHERE IN THE FIELD. Do you know what the median wage is for biotech researchers in the Bay Area? 80-fucking-thousand dollars a year. You'll never have a salary like that, and certainly not living in such a nice area. That's not even considering all the Numeraire I earn.
And the hilarious thing is you guys think it's all about money. The money is only secondary. Do you have any idea what an honor and privilege it is to work in Dr. Blaustein's lab? I'd do it for free if I had to. There is nothing more rewarding than knowing you're playing a part in curing cancer.
> Do you know what the median wage is for biotech researchers in the Bay Area? 80-fucking-thousand dollars a year.
uhhhh... I live in the bay area (Oakland/Berkeley) and make more than double that and don't feel particularly rich. It's fucking expensive here.
Good on you for curing cancer though. YOU HAVE TO LIVE IT!
As far as advice goes, though, I had to adjust to working out early in the morning. A co-worker actually taught me how to swim and we began swimming regularly after that, so relying on someone to work out at 6AM with you is great motivation to get up (Get up, swim then lift MWF, be in lab by 8-ish).
Whenever I'm in lab getting figures or whatever a guy in there now usually works out at like 11AM. He'll get there earlier like 7 or so, set up some stuff or take care of things, then go to the gym in the middle of his day. It really depends on what your lab environment is and how you structure your time. Meals I have less info to give; usually just packed lunch or we had way too many fast food options a short walk away.
lol dude thinks 80 thousand a year in san fran is above poverty
>50L of media
Assuming this whole post isn't bait, I hope your building has a shit-ton of autoclaves, otherwise everyone there hates you and your lab
Lost
You’re gonna make it mate
yoo me too
>Bio
lmao, literally why even chem makes twice that easily
it isn't hard just stick to a schedule, Very easy if you canmanage time.
>A co-worker actually taught me how to swim
>learning to swim in your 20s
hmmm are the memes true?
I'm white, I was just fat growing up so I never learned when I was young.
Almost done with my MS in clinical exercise physiology. Will be working on PhD in sport psych afterward. Pretty excited for it. I have to work night shifts in order to pay rent, bills, etc. but it’s all good brehs. There’s always light at the end of the scholastic tunnel
> I'd do it for free if I had to
>Dr. Blaustein
Don't tempt them.
>work in Dr. Blaustein's lab? I'd do it for free
Done!
Jow Forums just makes threads to brag about everything, don't they?
lemme guess bro, another 160k, 170k a year software engineer on fit right? and you're probably 22, 23?
half of it is larp
>retards falling for this b8 and not realizing he is being sarcastic
higher on both, 27.
I have a bachelors. I don’t believe I will ever go beyond that.
I have to start a business.
I love this post. Very creative. Very compelling. I re-read it a few times. A++ pasta attempt, I think you will catch on
Do people actually think this isn't satire/sarcasm?
>being so insecure he literally posts his W2 on Jow Forums
>makes a quarter of a million dollars a year and claims "i dont feel rich its expensive here"
lmfao has to be fake
What the fuck does this have to do with fitness?
When you put the amount of effort that it takes into grad/post grad in a natural science. You tend to get blinded by emotions.
It's okay, user. I didn't learn until I was 16.
Degreelet here, a little over a year left for my ADN and RN license, will get my BSN after that and then think about MSN after that. No bully pls.
Fake,if not you made me realize making 6 figures plus wont cure insecurity. Very sad

Is it worth it to get a phd in physics?
I love this post
I wanna master out but I don't see any jobs and I don't want to be the only one among my friends that's not a doctor. I'm just gonna ride it out and see if they eventually dismiss me
I'm doing a PhD in chemistry, but I live in a college and they cook all my food for me.
I want to do Masters in Pedagogy but I'm fucking SICK of academia.
I just want to, y'know, teach people shit.
Depends on the kind of physics.
starting a phd in the fall, really worried about maintaining a workout schedule and good diet. was already hard in undergrad
Believe me, it is way easier than in an office job. Sure, you always have to do something, but your hours are more flexible too (which is why you have no life, sure, beyond that little time to go to the gym).
>t. someone who went back for a second MA in a different field after working for a few years
>doing my phd in crystallography
>schedule is all over the place because of the stupid x-ray diffractometer
>start at 8 and finish at 8, obviously with a bunch of breaks inbetween but it still sucks
>keep getting job offers for easy IT work with damn good payment
I'm really tempted to take the easy route.
Physical chemistry here. I enjoy it a lot. As for making time to lift, I go late at night and have a shit sleeping schedule because of it. I really should try waking up and lifting early or going during lunch
I'm trying to be a physical chemistry now too. I moved from synthetic organic/inorganic chemistry into physical 'cause I'm trying to do kinetic experiments on my catalysts and model them theoretically. I would really like to improve my pchem knowledge. In undergrad it was that boring subject that took time away from synthesis, and now it seems like it's the other way around. Im lukcky that my lab, home and gym are all within 5 mina of each other, so I just lift after I set up rxns, then work them up before dinner.
We need you, oh crystal master. Please don't leave us.
Going to start my masters in computer science next semester. Hopefully can get some decent research experience so I can get my PhD at a better funded University.
>physics
>9 to 5
>7 weeks paid holiday
>get paid to go to 2 international conferences a year
>salary is nearly as much as a graduate job
Feel legit sorry for Americans
I do catalysis myself. You do kinetics on heterogeneous catalysts or homogenous?
University work blows my man. I was in it for 3 years, granted I only have my masters (neuro) but even guys who had PhD's were working next to be just doing easy lab work, research and menial stuff. I got paid 48, PhD guys probably dont get out much better.
Homogenous
No homo
Left a neuroscience masters to pursue sculpture.
Fuck STEM
More like fuck neuroscience.
You guys have no idea what's going on. But we study small systems, so at least we can figure out a few things. We just sculpt with atoms instead bb.
This topic has nothing to do with fitness

Don't be mad bro your women studies degree will help you find a job in McDonald's
>Wanting to apply the same methods and models of understanding of chem and physics to bio
>Is a scientist assumed to be knowledgeable on scientific methods and philosophy of science
Can't really blame anyone except the unis for not including enough phil of science in their degrees though
Im studying english and phonetics but interested in neuroscience too
What do? I think they all could suppory each other
>tfw PhD student and going into commercial afterwards
the pay is really not worth it.
Unless you become a brain surgeon (unlikely), or somehow get into pharma research/trials, all you'll be doing for 10 years is either collecting and recording samples, or crunching data
If you really want to do something, go into medical engineering with neuro. That's where the fun stuff is happening atm
Same. Though the cash isn't great right now cuz I'm staying in switzerland for a while, but when I'll be back to my homecountry I'll have a thiccc refund waiting for me.
Also, I worked for 2 companies in the past. You get way more free time desu, but honestly the work is not half as interesting so your work-life balance is shit, and if you are on good terms with your supervisor you can do flexible schedules. I find eating and training easier in academia, since I can avoid peak hours at the gym and just work on whatever schedule I want.
Id like to do research and Im interested in languages/language processing too
Though the english is there just so I could get a job secured
Replied to the wrong guy. whoops. I'm doing a phd in physics.
>Thinking that "neuroscience" is real bio
Did you study "cognitive science" too?
Sport science PhD student here. Pretty fine as long as you manage your time and plan in advance; and useful since other staff etc. all want and understand making time for training and gym.
This but art. Only hope is becoming a professor.
Does getting a phd in physics open up more/better jobs, is is a bachelors enough?
How about masters?
why physics ? should have gotten into mech engi
you fucked up
>So you make $60k/yr plumbing
Actually I took over my fathers self employed plumbing business two years ago and make 200k/yr charging 150 an hour. I wanted to take over sooner but my dad forced me to go to college because I got a full ride scholarship to Auburn. What a waste of time, Alabama fucking sucks.
>tfw raised by a single mother
Fuck rich people
200k, nice
Not that other user. You're making good money, so quit bitching.
Yeah the only downside is that I live in the boonies and most of my clients are very large ranches (10,000+ acres) and vacation resorts. I wouldn’t make it in the city.
Honestly, if you don’t have a passion for anything and just want to make some dough and have adequate people/negotiation skills then just work in a trade for a few years to get experience and save money and get a loan to buy the equipment you need to start your own business. If you did a good job at your former work and your clients liked you then just send them your card and charge slightly less than your old company. You’ll be making 100k starting easy. You won’t be a millionaire by 30 but you should be one easily by 40. That’s what my father did. He was so good at his job that he ended up stealing over half of his former employees clients and made them go out of business. The best part is, it’s an active job so you won’t be sitting on your ass in a desk all day.
a long time since I've seen this pasta
If you're not getting your PhD in Math or Physics please do not post in this thread. Your PhD means nothing.
I'm published, faggot. Fuck off.
You’ll most likely peak at 100k at around age 45.
>hurr durr only my degree is good
fuck off faggot, any bio/math/physics/tech(meh) degree is good
AHAAHAHAHA ART
YOURE USELESS FAGGOT. LITERALLY DEVIANTART AND WIKIPEDIA MAKE YOUR JOB OBSOLETE AHAAHAH
isn’t your field god-tier in both being required and in pay? educate me
it’s not his dad’s fault that he had his shit together. it’s not your fault that you were born to a single mother. make peace.
phd and becoming a professor is not bad
master's is shit
Doesn't this entirely depend on the field?
>85k when you are 35
meanwhile 25 year old doctors are paid more than that
you are not curing cancer though mate, don't think that highly of your research
>Doesn't this entirely depend on the field?
it depends on the uni and who's providing the phd grant
What's your thesis on
I thought about it for a bit, but realized I didn't want to be broke working on some shit thesis that will never have any practical use to anybody anywhere. Academia sucks balls and unless you absolutely love it, stay the fuck away. Now I'm sitting here as a broke med student instead. But hey, at least I'll be making decent money grinding myself to the bone in a few years.
>(which is why you have no life,
only for people with no discipline
you work diligently on research for 8 hours stop giving a shit abou it afterwards otherwise you will lose 10 years of lifespan due to the stress
Posting about art in a phd thread when art programs only offer masters
>Doesn't understand the function of art in society. Thinks it's all paintings in museums.
for some reason people think art is a synonym of modern art as opposed to the fuckton of media they consume every single day
stop complaining about doing your job piece of shit technician
I fucking hate your kind, always complaining about having to work
I love this. The bait is good
Also the numeraire reference is absolutely sick, keep it up lad
Also just for all of you faggots saying a PhD is always negative expected value, please consider that if you get a PhD in a computational science (Physics, CS, Math, Statistics) from a top school, you can literally earn 300k starting, exactly like the meme, if you get into the right firms and negotiate well. Compensation for a PhD quant at the better prop shops and quant funds can be 150k salary + 30k signing + 120k bonus
>thinks you need an art major to create media
20th Century Fox isn’t hiring idiots right now, sorry.
