It is never exact, but it is pretty damn close. Also don't fall for the "a calorie is a calorie" meme. Eat clean and fulfill all of your nutritional needs.

Calculate your TDEE (calculators are out there).
If you wanna gain muscle, add 20% to it, ensuring AT LEAST .8 grams of protein per lb of bodyweight, and at least .4 grams of fat per lb of bodyweight, put the rest into whatever makes you feel good (high carbs that are low glycemic index is a must for me) and go.
If you wanna lose weight, do your TDEE MINUS 20%, and distribute your calories the same.

in addition to what everyone else said you can weigh yourself on a weekly basis (usually i weigh myself a bunch of times monday/sunday and take the lowest measurement for consistency) and see if you're making about the right amount of progress and modify your calories accordingly

To be fair this it’s a good start for healthy eating as long as your getting most of your carbs from cleanish sources. You might feel like shit but your physique will stay the same.

You'll have to do some trial and error to figure out what works best for you, so track everything you eat for a few weeks in MfP and see if you're gaining weight/strength.
My TDEE came in at 2800, but I found I wasn't gaining until I started hitting 3500kcal+
Just keep adding until you find a point where your strength is increasing and you're gaining between 1-2lbs each week.
