Well they are a country with one of the highest rates of meat consumption so of course they have to do things dramatically more effectively.
Here in the Czech Republic, or at least in the village I live and the surrounding villages, the cattle grazes outside as much as possible, basically all year long apart from winter obviously.
Pigs, though, I don't think so.
One way or another, grazing outside is a very little to make up for all the stress and horrors they go through in their lives.

I hope you realize that there are large tracts of land on which bo crops can be grown and which are thus only suitable for grazing animals. The steppes and much of the American west, as well as other regions, would be totally incapable of yielding any food for humans at all if we all gave up on meat. Eliminating livestock would also mean no more natural fertilizer (using human shit is asking for a parasitic infection), and increased nitrogen pollution from fertilizer use. Consumption of meat must absolutely be moderated, but thinking that eliminating all livestock will be some tremendous environmental boon is shortsighted.

My cows are beginning to calve this week and I've been out there every day monitoring and keeping on eye on things. I've been examining the calves and and picking them up to put them on the scale. The moms and matriarchs watch attentively and curiously but are not suspicious or even remotely worried.

I would like to think that this was a stranger. But I doubt it based on what I know of traditionally operated farms and ranches.

The land I own is utter SHIT for growing human crops. It's rocky, uneven, hilly and gets poor rainfall. The only way I could farm it on the large scale to grow wheat or corn is with a major earthworks undertaking, irrigation from the aquifer, and copious amounts of fertilizer.

But ran with intensive management principles with an eye to the local ecology and animal rotation I can raise cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and chickens with zero inputs. The first two years I seeded local grasses and woody weeds. And in 10 years I haven't bought seed OR feed.

Traditional grain farming and vegetable farming requires a massive capital investment that the vegetarians don't want to admit to. And their utopian dream of permaculture forests are just a pipe dream. There isn't enough people or technology to grow food for the masses in that manner.

Meanwhile I'm the villain because I raise and slaughter animals in a way that has negligible impact on the environment. Zero inputs, zero vaccinations, zero hormones, zero deworming agents, zero antibiotics, zero pesticides, zero fertilizers, and no farm equipment I can't pick up and slide cinder blocks under.

Go take your fucking heirloom tomatos over to africa and see how well they do outside in the real world away from the sterile microclimate of your backyard which no real insect or animal threat exists.

It's important that people realize that they can eat things without cheese and meat. Too many people seem to think you can't make a meal out of veggies. I'm not vegan myself, but i sprinkle vegan meals in here and there to help balance things, not the least of which my own tastes and experiences

I only ask because there's plenty of money to be had out of your own back yard. One of my highschool friends has converted his whole yard to growing fresh produce. He started by working with one chef exclusively. Now he works with ten chefs in the city and has taken over two of his neighbor's back yards. He works closely with them "This is what I have, this is what I will have, this is what I can have" And the chefs love it and pay a premium for his stuff.

Alternatively if you don't have the space, you can rent land from farmers for dirt cheap. I have an apprentice who worked here for 18 months and he's specializing in "Marginal Farming" He rents the margins of space in traditionally operated farms. Those little diamonds and triangles in circularly irrigated fields? He rents those and other shit land the farmers have and raises chickens there. Makes a killing selling eggs at the farmer's market at $5 a dozen. clears $1.5k/wk cash in hand.

Yes but I don't have proper land - I live in a decent sized city right now (to minimize my commute) so my whole lot is only about 7k sqft. I have raised beds in back for herbs and limited vegetables. My fiance and I plan to move somewhere that allows chickens as soon as possible.
