Guys please I need help. I think I have Diogenes syndrome. I'm living in trash, and while my depression, and social anxiety is getting a bit better, I just freeze at the idea of cleaning my appartement because I just don't know where to start.
I want to move forward because I'm starting to get more social, and everytime a work friend ask to come over I'm just forced to make an excuse. I'm so ashamed of myself.
It's like everytime I come home I'm reminded of my worst phase. Sometime I wish I could just burn it all but I know I can do it.
I just need to know if any of you had any history of extreme cleaning, and if you had any advice to help me get through this. I feel like it's the last step to start a recovery ? Thank you.
Invite your work friend over for snacks and beer. Set it for a week or two. This will give you a deadline. It's plenty of time and the motivation to not disappoint them will keep you working.
I'd also like to add that alot of your mess is simple trash. Thats really not that bad. You only have to pick stuff up. Get a huge garbage bag and just collect stuff while listening to a podcast or music. Let this be your daily routine from now on. Do it.

nice One Piece collection
okay man seriously if you want to clean it up start off with buying a hundred black bags and get rid of all that trash hanging around
Chase Allen
jesus fucking christ the pizza boxes do what everybody else is saying, buy a gorillion garbage bags
Nathan Turner
Also I'll add the best way to clean up is to just start putting the garbage into bags. You do have garbage bags, right? If not, then get some. The first step is clearing all the trash. Take it out one week at a time if you have to, I dunno if you have a dumpster nearby or if you use trash collection cans. But each week dedicate yourself to clearing out as much as you can on trash night. I've cleaned my room fully several times but it always reverts back to this fucked up state. But you need to do it if you want any social life. After the trash is done, clean your sink and kitchen. Also clean your bathroom. Go out and get cleaning supplies if you need to. Just know someone else is out there struggling with the same shit brother.

This type of mess looks really chaotic and when you stand in the middle of it and look at it all at once, it most likely seems totally impossible to do anything. You need to stop panicking.
This actually isn't too bad, all you need to do is break it into pieces. You have three main things to do: >throw away garbage >vacuum/wash any surfaces that have been stained or are otherwise soiled >organize whatever is left And each of those thee things can be further broken into pieces.
The first is easiest. Just get a box of jumbo trash bags, pick a room, and just start sticking garbage in the bags. This is a mindless task. No pressure, no difficulty, just plug and chug. Just doing that much will make you feel a ton better. Rinse and repeat for each room.
Next, assess what carpets need vacuuming, what counters need washing, etc., and just pick one thing at a time and only worry about cleaning that one thing. Don't think about the rest of it, just clean one counter, vacuum one carpet, and so on until you're done.
Finally, take whatever furniture and appliances you have left in there, and just decide where you think they look good. Take is as a chance to create a new space for yourself by rearranging things into a new ideal. This part should actually be enjoyable.
Ryan Moore
yeah just start with getting rid of the trash, then worry about actually cleaning it
clean one room at a time, ask a friend or family member to help if you can because that will make it much easier, it will take awhile if you do it alone

>depression, and social anxiety stopped reading. you're not at all like Diogenes you massive fucking faggot
Eli Long
If you live in el paso TX I can help you. If not, here's some advice. Don't clean to clean it all up at once. Just do little things over time. Throw on some music and start with one thing. Get a trash bag, walk around and fill it up with every empty plastic bottle. Once it's full throw it out. Start taking bottles/ccans that have liquid in them with you to the kitchen or bathroom and empty them out. All the paper bags in there you can do a seperate day. If they're empty just take on and fold the others up and put them in and toss them out. Small steps. One thing at a time. One day at a time. Your mess isn't that bad. Once you see some clutter going out, Even if it's just a few bottles or bags, you're going to feel better about getting it done. You can do it user!!
I'm pretty sure I have it as well, it's not a fun time
Christopher Bennett
when you have cleaned out all that crap... consider changing your diet
all that beer and soda and fast food is going to kill you pretty soon
Grayson Gutierrez
Pizza boxes are such a pain in the ass to throw out once you have that many ugh.
Yeah I know...
Camden Gomez
just buy the biggest garbage bags available, a bunch of them
trust me you can at least clean out your fapden in a few hours, won't take long
Camden Allen
Just get up and do it. Bring 2 things out to the garbage each time you leave your house. Quit seeing it as some insurmountable mission or your anxiety will probably get the best of you and make things harder. Then once you've cleaned it, however long that takes, try and keep it clean.
Juan Ortiz
I gotta wait for trash night or I have nowhere to put the bags. Trust me, this ain't the first time I've cleaned this dumpster room. It's a chronically reoccurring thing though. I cleaned it a bit last week, it's a little better than it is in that pic now. That was at peak trash.
Aaron Phillips
It's kinda nice to see that i'm not alone in this. I hope we can get through that mess.
Thank you all for the advice. I'm just gonna try to do it step by step like you said. I have some trash bags laying around, but i'll buy more tomorrow. Just having you guys telling me it's possible gives me motivation. Thank you again I'll try this once I progress a bit more, thank you.
Owen Jenkins
And you probably don't have some syndrome you're just lazy as fuck and eat shit food. No wonder you feel like total shit. Look at your fucking diet, man
Isaac Allen
just get a few trash bags. It looks bad but this could be cleaned in like 2 hours.
Jason Miller
>try and keep it clean. If OP is anything like I am then it's just gonna revert back in time. Especially if he doesn't have much of a social life.
Nathan Foster
AND AT SOME POINT YOU HAVE TO ASK YOURSELF ABOUT THE NATURE OF SHREKS SNAPPING, YOU KNOW. YOU JUST HAVE TO. BECAUSE THAT'S NOT A LIFE WORTH LIVING, MAN, AND I-I'VE SEEN PATIENTS LIKE THAT IN MY CLINICAL PRACTICE. AND IT'S ABSOLUTELY MISERABLE. SO WE SAY - OK, SHREK SNAPS FOR HIS CRINGE COMPILATION, WE KNOW THAT MUCH. BUT NOW WE HAVE TO GO A LEVEL DEEPER.. WHAT NEED IS HE FULFILLING WHEN HE SNAPS? WELL, THAT'S A BLOODY GREAT QUESTION TO ASK. AND THAT'S WHAT THE MARXISTS GOT WRONG ABOUT SHREK -- THEY NEVER DUG DEEPER. AND THAT'S JUST WRONG. IT'S WRONG.
Hey man, put all of your plastic bottles in the recycling. Just those. Tomorrow is another day.
Ryan Young
FYI, i'm diagnosed and i'm only recently out of treatment (Citalopram and Xanax) because i'm finally getting my head out the water. Hasn't been easy. I'm also Type 1 diabetic since 15 years (mostly the cause of my depression and mental problems).
I don't really get you post but I hope it clears up. Also sorry i'm not english, so shitty syntaxe...
Connor Martin
Find an apartment complex and dump it in their dumpster
Ayden Morgan
You're gonna have bugs, mate. You have to clean and part of you clearly wants to clean. I know it's not helpful advice but you just have to do it. It won't even take long--it's mostly just throwing bottles and cartons away.
Lucas Diaz
Diogenes was not depressed, lonely or a loser. I didn't realize the normals made a "syndrome" that appropriates his name, but my point is that you are definitely not like him
Joshua Sanders
Guess what, I didn't name the fucking thing. It's not my point. You can call it the syndrome of I"'m a piece of trash living in it" if you want. But thanks for your input.
Kayden Myers
I'd start with getting those big black trashgabs anf filling them up with trash. Then pizza boxes and cardboard in recycle bin (blue bin)
Asher Wilson
Your problem here is probably that you're looking at it lump sum, "I have to clean the WHOLE thing or I will clean none of it."
Clean just a bit of it and call it a day. Some small part that you think you can handle. Do the same the next day. Keep doing that until the place is clean. You'll probably even find that you like the feeling of making your place clean in time and you'll be less reluctant to do it.
You don't need to walk the whole journey today, just make your first step.
Jeremiah Martin
Can you post an update after you clean up OP? I'm eager to see progress.
One thing that kicks my ass into cleaning is getting a new item like computer or tv, which makes me clean up so I have a good environment for it. It's a bit silly but bringing something new into the home makes me tidy up the rest to appreciate it better.
Andrew Fisher
Just go for it. Play your favourite music go full REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE and litterly start with the easiest thing. Just look at it like chipping away from a wall you want to take down Just force yourself. Go full tard and like bell tap your self or something you have 2nd thoughts and go for it
Hunter Rogers
you're originally welcome OP
Cameron Wood
I promise to keep you guys updated. One more motivation.

>fridgebro im having flash backs

I have the same but not with trash like empty bottles or pizza cartons. Any stones picked in a forest or any little fridge magnet given to me, I cannot get rid of it. What i started to do is to throw 50 things a day for a week, and now I do it once a month. You should start this way. The mental gymnastic for your case could be "I need to help the planet by recycling" instead of "I'm an autistic faggot who need to clean his shit". Forcing this in your brain could let you start cleaning . start with bottles, next day anything with cartons, next day aluminiun can, etc. put them in bags and bring to a sorting container. by next week all the thrash will be gone and you'll be feeling better already and move on to next step. I can't imagine how you are feeling because my problem is that i attach affection or think of future uses for stuff, which makes me keep everything. But trash like pics related really I don't get how you cannot throw it. Good luck brother.
