Best method of swimming...

best method of swimming? do i just do the overhand thing front crawl or the breast stroke and that gives me broad shoulders and i lose belly fat? how long do you swimfags swim for and what benefits have you noticed

breast stroke is slow and doesn't do much. Swim for as long as you want it takes time though imo is much more fun then running. Freestyle all the way

freestyle cool got it. yeah googling it though seems like the big shoulders thing is sort of a meme. they mainly get it from lifting weights to get bigger shoulders to benefit their swimming speed. still good cardio though

Swimming is great cardio. Works out more of your body than other types, and burns the same amount of calories in less time.

Breaststroke is used for swimming away from sharks, due to it's slow rhythm. You really think that's going to give you cardio?

Freestyle is your best bet; if you really want a challenge, learn butterfly, which uses even more of your body.

How do you even get into swimming? Like do you just do laps around the pool for an hour?

i plan to do it after my run. i'll start off with ten minutes cause i'm just starting to work out again and move up from there. it's gonna be awkward but it's one of those things i imagine where you don't think just do it and lose lots of weight as long as i make a habit of it. go hard for 10 minutes basically

Am I going to make anybody upset if I take up a lap pool trying to figure out the freestyle? I seriously barely know how to swim.

Freestyle, backstroke and butterfly are all fantastic cardio exercises.
Back and fly, are the main two lat-builders, as you're doing a lot of "pulling down" type movements, somewhat similar to a lat pulldown.
You get it some in freestyle, but not as much.
But there's so much arm movement and volume that it helps build a fair amount of shoulder muscle. Can still build better shoulders and lats in the gym by far, but as far as most sports go, swimming gives you a lot better shoulders and lats than most land-based sports.

Note on butterfly - as good of an exercise as it is, I recommend getting someone to coach you on this, else you're more likely to just fuck up your rotator cuff, or at the very least look like a total idiot.
At least with the other two, even if you don't know what you're doing at first, you'll still move.

You can just Google workouts. But you can go about it like any other cardio sport.
I preferred HIIT when I used to swim, rather than just back and forth for an hour, cause that gets boring as shit.

Consistency is way more important than being able to swim well. Like if you swim well for a month and stop vs the guy who swims like shit, but keeps at it for a year, of course the shitty swimmer will make more progress. Tortoise and the hare.

Usually not. Assuming your pool is crowded during lap swim, the courtesy is generally to have the fastest swimmers in one lane, and the slowest in the far lane. Just kinda hop in wherever people seem your own pace, and circle swim. Pic related. If you're sharing a lane, just stick to the right side, and you'll all fit fine.

Why would anybody need goggles in a pool?
Goggles exist so you can see the sharks coming and fight them off when you're in the ocean

No reason not to, really.
If you're swimming freestyle with your head lifted, you're craning your neck up, and sinking your hips into the water.
It just adds to the drag you have to fight against, opposed to having your whole body in line, and parallel to the surface of the water. Much more streamlined that way.

With goggles, you can also use the lines at the bottom of the pool to orient yourself when you're looking down into the water.

I don't have access to a pool, but there's a sea near me. Any tips?

How good is sidestroke? I can't rly do freestyle, so I'm wondering if I should learn it (I also switch to backstroke sometimes). And after like 40 minutes of swimming I get muscle spasm in my leg and feet.

swim in the ocean, you'll get more exercise because of the waves. if you have a surfboard you could paddle out to beyond the waves and the water will be smoother and easier there

You could use goggles to line yourself up with the line at the bottom of the pool. Just make sure you're always moving both arms and you have your head straight

I've got no experience with ocean swimming. I probably wouldn't do it alone, though.
No matter how good the swimmer, accidents happen.

I mean, eh? It's useful for swimming hella long distances with minimal effort.
On land, front crawl's equivalent would be like going on a run.
Side stroke would be more like a leisurely walk.

By spasms, do you mean cramps, or something else?
The cramps could be dehydration, or the muscles just not adapting to swimming yet.
Other than that it could be things like a zinc or calcium deficiency. I used to get thigh cramps from lack of zinc during water polo.
