Is pursuing boxing worth the risk if I intend to study mathematics and physics? Other Boxing discussion also welcome.

Sure
Get into boxing but study law instead. That way you’ll be fine when you lose 5-10 IQ points.

Probably not, OP.
New research just came out that even minor concussions significantly increase dementia risk.
Naturally, this doesn't mean IQ, but I think that even minor concussions/subclinical traumatic brain injuries have effects on IQ that we haven't studied yet. So weigh those risks against the potential reward.
>I am an actual doctor
no, boxing is for poor people who don't have IQ worth preserving anyway
What's a good combat sport to learn for fitness, fun, grills, minimal brain danage/joint destruction?
The Klitschko brothers are incredibly intelligent. Vitali is a PhD
Judo, maybe. We do tend to be a bit rough on the joints but not as bad as most other grappling sports, and very little brain damage.
I've had three big concussions unrelated to boxing and I dont think so gud n e mo
Not worth it
they're still gonna have dementia in their 60s
How can i tell a McDojo from the real deal? I live in the middle of bumfuck North Carolina and the closest club, which is BJJ, is an 80 minute drive away.
Supposedly they have 4 BJJ black belts as instructors.
Post club. I'm in NC as well, I might be able to help.
I’m only 80% on BJJ as it’s judo’s cousin but the general rules apply. Check out a session with them they should have
> some technical training
>sparring
>people who regularly compete
All those thing are good to have
Avoid:
> no one sweats in practice
> no sparring only technique
> everyone is either 35+ or a kid
Yeah, seems alright. Go for it.
I boxed until halfway through medical school. I suffered what was in retrospect a moderate-severe concussion during a heated sparring match, after which I backed into my buddy’s car, then bombed an exam the next day, and felt “off” for a bout a month after. I quit then. I absolutely love boxing as a sport but the more I learn in medicine the less and less I can ever justify it.
Boxing is fun
>tfw 2nd year med student wanting to do an amateur boxing match
Guess it's BJJ then
If youre blessed with intelligence just go for the studying bud
I would do bjj if you're worried about brain damage. Still lots of fun, still get to spar, still has practical self defense application.
Concussions are a common occurence in BJJ as well.
The very idea that you are protected from it or that they don't happen is what make BJJ more dangerous in terms of head injury then Boxing.
Reddit has unironically a good bjj subreddit. Search for your location or ask in a thread, you'll get some quality information for sure
Seems like all the fun combat sports are out :(
Concussions will be somewhat common in all combat sports. BJJ probably has a lower concussion rate that any other combat sport. You also don't receive repetitive blows to your skull that may cause long term problems like in boxing. Just look old BJJ practicioners vs boxers.
>BJJ more dangerous in terms of head injury then Boxing.
BJJ fag trying to sound hard. This isn't even close to true. How many people have ever died in BJJ or MMA? Like two in recorded history. Multiple people die in boxing every year, amatuers and pros. Not to mention blindness and punch drunk.
> How can i tell a McDojo from the real deal?
The biggest red flag is if their belt system guarantees a rank up after a certain amount of time. It may seem obvious when you read it now, but you'd be surprised how many people get sucked in.
sure, not like you are going to have 500 amateur fights and 40 pro fights ahead of you
most of the time you are just hitting the bag or working on cardio.. sparring is fun and you can still get knocked out or knock someone else out.
source: i degrees in chemistry and philosophy (though i use neither, not that im complaining have a good job that is unrelated)
Jiu Jitsu
I roll with a ton of doctors at my school in LA
Vitaly can't even string a sentence together. There is a myriad of YouTube videos, it even spawned it's own memes on Russian speaking social media.
You can become a decent boxer, fit with dangerous punches, without doing a ton of heavy sparring. Not if you want to actually compete, but the training can still be fun and useful without accumulating a ton of brain damage.
>tfw wanted to get into boxing but don't want to lose head stuff
If I just got really good at defense could I avoid getting my shot concussed into oblivion?
seems solid the one guy has a black belt under the machados which is a legendary bjj family
Cleverly has a degree in mathematics. In my little college town, there are a lot of older profs who box at my gym. I used to worry about brain damage too. Now, I only spar once a week. And I only pick opponents that I know aren't assholes. We go at about 30% of our power. Even when you get hit in the head, it's just mildly annoying, never painful. Also, we wear headgear. I know in most cases headgear doesn't really help. But if you do go very light during sparring, headgear will absorb a lot of those already light punches.
More often than not, it's not fights that are a problem, but heavy sparring sessions. James Toney, who now slurs his speech like a perpetual drunkard, was notorious for his insane sparring sessions. He'd spar hard as fuck, day in and day out.
Just keep sparring light, maybe stop amateur fights, and focus a lot on drills. You'll be fine and this will still translate well into self-defense.
Pursue it, but pursue it as a hobby/learning to defend yourself type of way. Let's be honest, unless you've been doing it from a very young age, you're not going to become a pro world champ making a lot of money in that.
So, don't go in there sparring niggers/beaners daily thinking you'll make it big someday. Spar sparingly just to test how your skills are coming along. I tend to spar once a month, if EVEN.
ask nathan cleverly
Hey, I'm from scottsdale and found this place really close to me. The only hesitation I have is that it seems I will just be promoted to blue belt without doing any sparring. They also do not compete and do not encourage competing. Should I look elsewhere?
They make it sound like the planet fitness of BJJ
I’m actually not sure if you’re the same user, but there was another one who asked about the exact same place. It was weak and improvement would be slow at best would be my guess
Dude same. I was looking to start some form of martial arts but i am still not sure since i'm studying law and don't want to fuck up my head. What are your observations so far?
>reading all these posts about concussions and shit
What about Graeco-Roman wrestling? Not OP but I want to learn some sort of martial art that’s not some gay chink shit and won’t fuck my brain.
>Max Cock
Good fucking luck learning it if you aren't in middle or high school.
It's a PhD in, like, sports management, from some no name ukrainian university. His thesis was on boxing management.
Other than cardio, what are good exercises for boxing? I did 30 minutes of punching for the first time the other day and now my back is so sore it hurts just to fart
I’m in my second year into uni.
That's why you have to fight like Floyd and never get hit. Too bad for Floyd he was already -30 IQ points from birth.
Well then you better hope you're at a D3 school because otherwise you're shit outta luck.
no, its not worth it
Turkish oil wrestling is Jow Forumss sport
Ask Nathan Cleverly, he's got an actual math degree
The Klitschko's have degrees in sports wellness or something plus I think those PHDs are honorary
Nigga all my teeth are chipped, my shoulders are packed with scar tissue and my wrists hurt on cold days.
Jujutsu is not good if you're worried about joint health and head injuries.
Skipping tabata.
2 min skip
1 min burpees
2 min skip
1 min mountain climbers
2 min skip
1 min squat jumps
Which is better for self-defense against unarmed drunks; boxing, BJJ, or MMA (is this even a style), or idk if anyone can recommend any.
Pkt for self defense, I'm not ever doing any of that shit ever again, just this. Fucked my elbows up in bjj, teeth knocked out boxing, no more.
Boxing, if only to learn how to throw and take punches. BJJ is a grappling style, you don't want to roll around in a parking lot of a bar, and the other dude will probably square up to throw punches anyway.
Boxing is effective (I like Muay Thai myself, but realistically most casual pants or jeans are terrible for kicking), but punching without gloves can fuck up your hands. Wrestling is the best. If you can find wrestling for adults, do that.
Boxing will make a man out of you, you limp wristed twink.
>I suffered what was in retrospect a moderate-severe concussion during a heated sparring match, after which I backed into my buddy’s car, then bombed an exam the next day, and felt “off” for a bout a month after.
What was it like? How did you feel like? How did you know you had a concussion?
>t. just started sparring
>sure, not like you are going to have 500 amateur fights and 40 pro fights ahead of you
this desu
Buy a gun.
Fuckin this, people think that boxing is a bloodsport or something. 90% of the time you're training technique and working on your cardio and most of your sparring sessions are going to be light technical sparrings. I've been boxing for 4 years and i've had like 4-5 strong spar sessions. And btw, you're not as fragile as you think you are. Boxing for hobby is not going to harm you in any way
