Trust me, because a study or report that takes any percentage of possible self reported German ancestry and uses that information as a count towards another German-American is idiotic and anyone that takes a second to look at the numbers will know its bullshit.
To be classified as German-American all it takes is often a self reported claim of supposed German ancestry. Using such an open ended definition means that every time a person with German ancestry has children in to a British-American family that the amount of British-Americans decreases and the number of German-Americans increases.
The reason why this happened is because categorising yourself as British-American became almost a sign of being closer to the British and therefore Un-American. No one wanted to be associated with African, Irish or Italian Americans either and so German-American became a standard "foreign but still American."
