i feel like a lot of the people who fought in past conflicts, esp during WW2, wouldnt like how the west turned out and defect if they knew what was up now

Well, soldiers in WW2 got drafted. They didn't fight for values or ideologies.

If I had to wager a guess, I would guess that those soldiers didn't give a fuck about policies and shit, but rather kept themselves occupied with their own business.
