There's a lot of truth to this and the robots here won't want to admit it. They base a lot of their conclusions off of observations made of people in public--grocery shopping, walking, at school, and at similar places. And they're focused on themselves, what's going on in their lives, and their own thoughts, so they aren't going to go out of their way to interact with or be nice to you. But generally, if you approach people in a positive manner, even just with a smile, people will be polite and positive back. There's assholes out there, but an important part of growing up is learning how to recognize them as assholes and stop trying to figure yourself out or base your self image on their reactions. People do generally come across as very vapid and self-absorbed to me too, but instead of feeling anger or disgust, I feel pity for their lack of insight. They're like lost children stuck in adult bodies. Don't let them drag you into their search for what they're missing.

I don't hate people but I do assume the worst. When I am walking my dog I assume every person who comes up to me is going to beg for money or harass me otherwise.
