Partially true.
Some pallets are treated with a chemical called methyl bromide. It’s a pesticide to protect the pallets against insect attacks.
Most pallets will have a stamp, seared into the wood, from the IPPC that will show how the wood was treated. DB, for debarked. KD for kiln dried. HT for heat treated. MB for methyl bromide. The three former are fine to have inside, they’re just low quality, knotty pine or for. MB is not something you want in a living space. It’s been outlawed in most countries so it’s increasingly uncommon but it’s still out there.
Make sure the pallets you use have the stamp and that ‘MB’ isn’t on it. If the pallet has no stamp, don’t use it. If the pallet looks like it was reassembled from other planks, e.g. different types of nails, different shades of lumber, empty nail holes, don’t use it. Treated lumber usually has a weird greenish or red tint. If you work with raw pine and fir often enough, you’ll learn to spot it.

Also I think I can understand why someone might pretend to have a girlfriend/wife at work. Technically speaking it's illegal to base hiring/promotion/treatment on a job based on your relationship/marital/parental status, but it happens anyway. They'll want to find out and they will eventually, and then this affects how they treat you. It can be who they choose for promotions. It can be who they decide needs to work the shit shifts because "lol user doesn't have a wife/kids so just make him do all the shit-tier shifts"
