i've been squatting and deadlifting since i started lifting in 2011, i think they're good lifts, but if you just want to look good man i totally understand why someone wouldn't give a shit about either of them

they take more effort than anything else, the aesthetic returns aren't really that high relative to easier shit you could do, you are going to need to spend a good amount of time and effort tweaking technique, you'll probably get some minor injuries along the way

just do whatever you enjoy doing, if you like squatting and deadlifting you are going to gravitate towards a style of training that prioritizes them anyway, and if you don't you probably won't stick to those types of programs anyway and might as well just curlbro it up

SS is not a meme, but you should look for a PDF of the book and READ IT. Most people haven't actually done SS proper, so they don't get the best of it.

Finally, you're not gonna be on SS for more than 6 months, maybe (probably 4 months tops). It's only meant to get you comfortable with the movements, and get you moving actual adult weights that you can grow from. Go ahead and do SS, but READ THE BOOK

SS and Gomad is good. Especially if you're naturally skinny (because usually naturally skinny people have a hard time eating enough and the milk helps with that). It is very good for gaining strength, and most people gain a lot of leg muscle. That being said you don't need to follow it to the letter. Add in 3x8-12 barbell curls for arms, and you can always add in extra stuff for back.Additionally, SS doesn't hit chest with very high frequency, so after a few weeks you might add in some dips after you finish your main lifts. I'd also recommend doing reverse flyes because the hit your rear and middle delts better than shoulder presses and will help your shoulders be more evenly developed. Just make sure you do these after your main lifts. Also, if you notice yourself getting really fat, then your eating too much. If this happens eat a few hundred calories less and you'll be back to making progress while not turning into a lardass.

As a natty the Deadlift is very much worth it though since it develops a bunch of muscles that you otherwise would have to isolate or you look like shit. It is pretty good for back developement, you get really nice traps from it and your forearms will improve a bunch. So I think even for pure aesthetics atleast some amount of deadlifting is good. Squatting however I am not so sure anymore, seems like my ass is getting too big and I might drop the Squats for a while and just do DL for my legs for a bit until my ass and quads are a bit smaller.

I always just trained Squats for strength and never for size and yet here I am with huge quads and a big ass and I am "only" squatting 3pl8 for reps and almost 4pl8 1rm.

But I guess its better to have to big legs/ass than too small because losing muscle should be easy right ?

I dont know man, I am this guy and my ass is really getting too big. If I engage my glutes my ass looks like fucking Jon Snows ass in that one scene (pic related) which is not manly anymore imo.

Better to cool it on the squats and just build a big back for now and get my DL up further. I just have crazy good glute/leg genetics for some fucking reason, wish I had it that easy putting on mass on my upper body. I mean its not going that bad but I got a huge lower body just by doing Squats and DL almost exclusively.

i train strictly for hypertrophy but aesthetics does depend on lower body as well. i'm not talking about ridiculous quad sweeps or an SS + GOMAD body, but having decently large and defined quads, solid calves and sculpted and large glutes will make women putty in your hands.

tip: when showering with a girl ask her to wash your back. if she doesn't feel your ass up, you haven't been hitting legs enough.

it's not just Jow Forums. brosplits are optimal only to advanced trainees because adding further mass to a bodybuilder's physique requires such a ridiculously high degree of overload that they have to cram in tons of work in one workout just to disrupt homeostasis. a downside of this is that recovery times from such a battering are very long, which ends up resulting in brosplit style training - high volume low frequency.

guys read articles, columns etc about heath's back workout and think "well if he's the best i must train like him!" and copy this shit. and it's not that these routines are necessarily really bad (they still incorporate high volume and the lower weights used by less advanced guys means that under-recovering/over-reaching/over-training is very unlikely with these routines), but doing a routine with more frequency and less volume per workout would much better suit their level of advancement. this is why beginners can squat close to maximally on SS three times per week and make gains every single time - the stimulus required to disrupt homeostasis is very small in a novice, weak beginner, meaning that this kind of frequency can be used. but if chad wesley smith tried to do 3x5 three times per week close to maximum and increase it every time, he'd be severely overreached in just one week probably.

tl;dr they aren't the devil but they are suboptimal to everyone interested in hypertrophy who's not an advanced bodybuilder, powerlifter or similarly large and strong people
