Knew a dude that was beaten so bad the doctor wasn't sure if he was going to make it. Ended up in an orphanage and had to make his own life. Grew up to be a genuinely kind man who helped my grandmother after my grandfather passed away, had a good relationship with his kids, was semi-retired but managed apartments. Plus, he was just a warm, nice person to be around. Never let anyone be left out of a conversation. Never bitched about how hard he had it as a kid or how hard it was growing up.
