you have to market yourself well, actively record data, interact with fans and do this all while being able to keep the skill level to stay at the top

A more apt comparison for professional gamers is professional athletes. Both train relentlessly and obsessively in order to perform a narrow set of tasks at extremely high levels. Neither directly contribute anything to society. And yet society seems to hold a lot more admiration for athletes.

One thing you'll notice too is that they constantly comb through stats and watch replays over and over again while theorycrafting and coming up with new playstyles and techniques.

To be fair, competitive video gaming has only been around for the last 30 or so years and has only become popular worldwide very recently. Zoomers will probably legitimize competitive gaming if it doesn't implode, or their kids will.

I was a pro gamer for three years, it was fun. Way more fun than thots. Get to travel around the world for free, eat great food and get worshipped by nerds. The getting worshipped part makes me feel like a roastie with all the free attention I get.

Athletes get paid millions of dollars to throw a ball into a hoop, or hit a ball with a stick. They are completely narrow skillsets that have almost no applicability outside their chosen sport.
