lol why would you assume that? Most men actually kill themselves in their 40s and 50s and serotonin and dopamine levels plummet as you get older. Depression is inheritable, his dad suffered from it, it inhibits your ability to change your life or care about doing so, add the statistic that 42-63%(based on different studies) of obese school age children become obese adults and you get a constant physical reminder of childhood trauma and a positive feedback loop of food -> depression -> food -> depression.
