You wouldn't call yourself a doctor without having gone to med school, lawyer without law school, pilot without going to flight school etc.

It's not about prestige and elitism, it's about people using a protected job title without having qualifications. I don't know why it seems to happen so much in engineering but for people with real engineering degrees it is annoying to always see some "self-taught" 18 year old code-monkey pretend to be a software engineer.
