I'm starting a job as a server on Wednesday.
I have until then to study the menus and am procrastinating. Might make up an excuse to my boss about not being able to take the job anymore and just work at Sprouts or something.

why do you have to study the menus? don't you just ask "what can I get you?"

You have to be able to know exactly what a customer is talking about on the menu and know what ingredients are in each meal and what comes with each meal in order to offer suggestions and possibly up-sell.

Are you sure? When I don't know something, I just ask a senior employee or a manager. And patrons don't mind when I tell them that I'll need to ask a senpai. My boss told me he'd rather me ask a million questions than make a mistake. Am a waiter, btw. And it gets easier. No-one expects a newbie to be an expert.
