I was always wondering, do pullups on a pullup machine allow for any progress? I could probably do like 4 or 5 wide pullups and that's it. and the number would shrink with every set

Pic is me When I started doing pullups I could only do about the same as you. Now I can do about 15. Truthfully the only way to improve this is by doing more pullups. The machine works too but pull ups work the supporting muscles too (often my abs get sore). In my experience the machine makes me feel the pump on my forearms before my back for whatever reason, but your case may be different. Either way you will still get some back development
