Coping.

With that said, it is good to have a solid strength base from doing a beginner program like SS for 4-8 months.

>What's the point of things with a point?

Competing in sport...
Not everybody has such an autistic personality they need to train and do roids for 5 years to find a girlfriend.
I started lifting *after* I found my wife, so I just lift to get strong as fuck and maybe one day compete at elite level

So unless I am a professional weightlifter, "functional strength" is useless to me?

Strength helps in all sports.
Being strong will help you in everything from football, to running, even to fucking golf, although maybe not sports like chess

>I started lifting *after* I found my wife, so I just lift to get strong as fuck and maybe one day compete at elite level

That 30-year old boomer raising another man's kids.

It’s good for any sport

I am a 28 year old boomer.
I've got a younger wife who was a virgin before meeting me, a high paying work at home job, a home gym, and a firm handshake.
Zoomers be jelly

WHAT IS A BOOMER

Basically everything you wish you could be but can't because you were born after the collapse

I'm a millennial what catchy nickname do I get?

?
>retard

please explain how squatting and deadlift will make me a better golfer

It's not even the collapse. Half of Europe had gotten turned to rubble twice in the last 50 years, the other half was commmunist. Africa and to a lesser extent Asia hadn't industrialized. And this was when they first started offering those nice pension plans, which companies could afford because of the above and because they wouldn't have to start paying them out for another 20 years or so. Boomers weren't living in a world where the cost of sand for concrete quintupled over the last decade because of developing countries and China using it, so houses were pretty affordable.

Boomers were just incredibly, incredibly lucky.

Building strength for functional purposes. Like hitting people or slave labor.

Core and spinal stability for a better swing, strong back for slinging the golf bag around, more body mass to better handle all the beer you drink over 18 holes you fucking degenerate alcoholic.

idk why else

On the Day of the Helicopter, you'll need functional strength to throw all these antifa fucks out the open doorway.

yeah but what is it

It’s just a meme to mock older millenials and old people in general

oh thanks

If you have to ask, you either don't play or really suck at it.

>I'm a millennial what catchy nickname do I get?
millenials are called boomers on this site in case you have been living under a rock

Same man

literally wrong

CNS adaptation (technique/form/practice) >>>>>>>> brute strength

the best athletes are almost never the strongest. The football kids who master drills and get individual coaching are the ones who play at college. Deadlift/squat/bench strength is actually quite useless if your nervous system can't translate it into anything meaningful. You'll never be able to use your squat or deadlift strength without practice in different planes of movement. Get out of here with your 90s dad science

The only point is to brag about it on the internet

That's why 99% of people at the gym don't squat above 2 plate, nobody gives a fuck

It's a marketing term coined to shill powerlifting to idiots.

If you are not an athlete, then "functional training" is things that will improve your life. People mainly use it as a way to elevate themselves over other people saying "what i do is better than what you do" so it kinda gets a shitty wrap. Functional training is doing movementsthat allow you to enjoy life more, like being able to play with and pick up your kids.

this there was literally no noticeable strength difference between me and a guy at my BW, who lifted like 30% of my 1RMs, during out first BJJ sparring. training compounds like deadlift/squat/bench only makes you strong at deadlift/squat/bench. gym strength is completely useless outside the gym

>What's the point of "functional strength"?
If you have no actual use for it, then the answer is "NONE".

Same here desu. We've been together 5 years now, hopefully one day I'll be good enough to get a top 3 finish at USAPL raw nationals. Feels good man.

>doesn't know how to apply his strength outside of the gym so it's all "useless"

haha yea for sure man. Everyone knows that those muscles you train to move hundreds of pounds around every other day just atrophy the moment you stop doing your squats/bench/deadlifts.

Do you want to get fucked up by a hungry bitch at McDonald's or not?

It's what you use during hand to hand combat.

Don't be that Zyzzz looking dude who gets his ass kicked by less aesthetic dudes

>41yr old boomer w/27yr old gf.

This.
Stronger hips and core = consistentcy in the swing path and distance.

Why didn't Tiger Woods ever squat or deadlift?

Personally, I noticed it was much easier to
>carry groceries
>help people move shit
>climb stairs
>control my dog
>do yard work
>play guitar(grip strength)

Basically any activity that requires some muscle feels much less awkward. Also if you look strong, people dont fuck w you. I consider that functional.

>driving with gf to dinner
>My truck all the sudden dies
>stuck on busy southern California highway.
>traffic all around
>wait for a gap
>push truck across 3 lanes and up a driveway in to a parking lot
>gf just sat there in passenger seat
>guy gets out of his car to help but I'm already up the driveway and done
>gf is impressed
>end up eating at a 5 guys and blown away at how shitty it is while waiting for tow truck

And people don't understand why functional strength is important. . Sheesh

lifting shoes, knee wraps, weight belt for only 305 lol

i find gymnastics fun

How do you know he doesn't? It isn't like you have to, but I can promise you it helps.

Am I zoomer tier if I was born in 1996(22)?

Atheltes actually train their sport rather then fuck off with weight all day.

At most they'll use weight to help build a bit more strength endurance and power and help maintain when they aren't training their actual sport.
And that's it.
They probably spend less time lifting then the average powerliftingincel.

yeah, boomer tier is at least late twenties

The desperate attempt to shield the boomer generation from the growing hatred of the younger generations isn't working.
It's actually making us more aware of you and hating you more.
Mainly because most of us who're old enough recognize what you people are doing.

I use lifting shoes for my

To function

sounds like bitch mode to me and the complete opposite of functional strength, stop using that crutch and get strong faggot

How much do you weigh if you can’t even squat a plate?

They're comfy. I'm not buying another pair of gym shoes just to make you think I'm less of a bitch.

I'm only a week in.

Oh, then that’s ok then. Best of luck on your journey.

>I'm not buying another pair of gym shoes just to make you think I'm less of a bitch.

its not just me who thinks you are a bitch, so does stacy

moving furniture
working outdoors
general health
sports

It took me 2 months starting from 6' 148 skelly to get to a 1pl8 squat. Took me forever to learn how to eat so I'd stop stalling at baby weights.

>tfw so bad at life that I have no friends and will end up alone with nobody to help me even move a couch.

I will be that old man who you see carrying a new refrigerator into my house all alone

He absolutely did.

Almost a year in now, biggest issue has been eating at a caloric surplus. Highly recommend tracking calories and macros if you haven’t been.

>although maybe not sports like chess
A healthy body fuels a strong mind, an unhealthy body with strong mind is like having a high end cpu on a low end motherboard, you'll bottleneck its performance.

I've started buying 2L jugs of whole milk, funnelling 8 scoops into them as I make room, and making sure I can get through each one in 3 days.

That's roughly an extra 650 calories and 85 protons per day, and I find that it doesn't hurt my appetite too much.

Maybe I should start tracking for real but this seems to be working for me.

sometimes I forget how hard it is for others to start off.. I was front squatting 1plate after cleaning it my 1st time lifting and hitting 1.5plate for bench and 2.5 plate dl that 1st week at 185lbs
Then again I come from a hard working background and was always athletic.

>Then again I come from a hard working background and was always athletic.

I was always athletic, but in a very cardio-heavy sense (which also meant my diet wasn't very protein-heavy at all). The difference between being under 150 lbs and 185 lbs is immense.

sorry to tell you this user, but even in high school when I was 140lbs I was forced to go work construction on the weekends with my dad. He would make me move sheets of drywall that were 120lbs a piece. I am sure I could squat my body weight back then... at a party I was able to squat down and put 2 girls on my shoulders and walk around with them for a little while.

lmao

>t.terrible ““““athlete””””

I just enjoy training for strength a lot more than I do for aesthetics. Though I still try to keep my body symmetrical and good looking, I don't enjoy lifting for looks.

protip: it's the same training

first off, there is no such thing as useless strenght therefore the term "functional strenght" is an irrelevant term since all strenght is functional, however there are training methods that allow you to use your strenght in a more effective way for a specific purpose (i miss when it was simply athletism), a solid strenght foundation will carry over the every single sport and physical activity in existence. every single physical ability comes from strenght, but obviously some require a different and more dirrect approach to it, by increasing your strenght you can increase everything else better than just training that specific skill alone.

Sad but true. A Crossfitter will be way better at BJJ (or pretty much any sport) than a guy who has been doing Starting Strength for the same period of time.

I've found being strong to be incredibly helpful. There's lot of various physical activities I can pretty much "pick up and play" because I have a solid strength foundation. For example yesterday I was doing some major landscaping of my yard that required me to do a shitload of digging and hauling buckets/wheelbarrows of dirt. Everything from benchpress to rows to deadlifts to farmers walks came into effect here.

This. people online can never relate to this; do they just all live in the downtown core?

Throwing manlets into the manlet pit.

I agree somewhat but I think traditional barbell training supplemented with lots of running will benefit a striking martial art like muay thai better if flexibility is maintained.

Deadlifts are great knockout prevention. it trains the muscles in your neck which will help keep head rigid when struck.

Overhead Press trains the muscles in the shoulders/arms which will increase punch strength and give you more options to generate power.

Squats will train your entire body to allow you to execute your kinetic chains very powerfully

Bench can help you out in the clinch.

Antagonistic exercises need to be done to make you balanced.

You need to do a good amount of running/sprints

What's the point of being a faggot you waste of space? If you don't compete why the fuck are you training? There's you're answer brainlet

TO KILL NIGGERS IN THE UPCOMING RACE WAR MOTHERFUCKER

squatting high phaggot. deload to bar and work on form.

That's below parallel, you utter moron

youtube.com/watch?v=zhrYY3ocQ5o

you don't need to be athletic to do well in golf idiot

No it's not LMAO. Its not even parallel yet... don't tell me you squat like that.. If you aren't going ATG you are not squatting properly

Attached: BrFw0GCIgAADEQQ.jpg (599x501, 43K)

I played golf competitively for 15 years, including a couple of pro tournaments. I can absolutely guarantee you that squatting and deadlifting more will cause you to hit the ball farther, and thus make you a better golfer. I went from driving it 290ish yards when I was 18 years old and 150 lbs, to hitting it 330+ at 26, 220 lbs, with a squat and deadlift of 500+ lbs.

There's a point where time in the gym is taking away from time actually practicing to the point where its doing more harm than good, but your dumb ass absolutely should be squatting and deadlifting at least twice a week each.

Spoken like a true faggot that thinks soccer, or something equally gay, is really a sport.

anything to cope with the fact that you're a weak, emasculated little bitch, huh, squirt?

Attached: 1503459251779.jpg (209x207, 27K)

it functions

I've read a story before about Alexander Alekhine, and about how he prepared to win the world championship over Capablanca. He went completely Rocky 4, staying in a small cabin in the woods. He apparently cut out drinking and smoking and did a lot of calisthenics.
>Phillips tells us that Alekhine had trained for the match very much like a boxer conditioning himself for a fight.
So yeah, it's possible that lifting could help with chess

>high paying work from home job
Oh boy here it comes

Literally everything. My liftbro and I did compounds for strength for years. Noticed improvements all over the place. Hauling heavy shit, yard work, picking up wife/kids, subduing drunk assholes.
Then one day my gym bro was in a bad motorcycle accident. Recovered slowly with a year of PT. Doctors said if he hadn’t been in such good shape with a strong, muscle covered skeleton he might have been killed or never walked again.
