Unless you're actually monitoring them all day every day, you aren't actually getting a good idea of their caloric intake. For example, if I eat almost all my calories at lunchtime at work, coworkers would think I eat a metric fuckton more than they do. In reality, this isn't actually the case because I'm just not spreading it around the day. Or I could pig out one day at a restaurant or family/friend gathering, but it's not indicative of how I normally eat on an average day.

When they overeat, they tend to make up for it by later skipping meals or eating less the next day unconsciously
They only eat when truly hungry and aren't shy about throwing away the rest of their plate or passing up snacks when offered
They both participate in organized exercise (going to the gym, working out, playing sports, etc.) and incorporate a good amount of physical exercise in their daily routines (walking to work, standing up for walking breaks during work, playing outside with their kids, etc.)
They eat out considerably less than the average person and prefer home-cooked meals.
They’re young, active, and are that bad meal is usually the only thing they eat all day

This is why I can't gain weight. If I manage to eat at a surplus one day, I don't have any desire to eat the next day. It physically and psychologically hurts me to even think about eating too much. I'll never understand how people manage to do it.

Yeah same here, I was a fat kid. In high school I stopped eating during school (none of my friends did so instead of eating alone like a loser I hung out with them), and guess what, I thinned out. I realised it wasn't genetics after all, it was my parents feeding me too much as a kid. They're not bad parents overall so I feel bad blaming them but really it's their fault I was fat for most of my life. At least by uni I was a normal weight.
I'm also finally on my way to getting shredded, I've never fully come out of skinnyfat but this summer I decided to finally become lean.

Eating shit with no exercise will have other effects on your body than just weight gain. Your skin will get soggier, looser, shittier. Your mood will swing, your ability to produce top % solutions to general things will get shittier. You might get more tired, you might feel sick when exercising. I'm currently working away my body fat (pretty skinny fat rn) but I used to literally pig out every couple of days and sleep away the next few days and eat minimally (I was a NEET then). Most of the girls you see know that are skinny but eat a lot shitty foods with no exercise will be hit by their bad habits (either by aging or gaining weight) in the next 5-10 years.
Also as a girl I get shitty distribution areas for fat, mainly my stomach, so there's actual incentive for me to work out, other than my worrying for the future.
