have you tried sit ups?, if you don't fully touch the ground deactivating your core then its actually a good exercise (crunches are the ones you want to avoid) then you can do harder variations like decline sit ups and weighted, if you can take anythng from this comment is that to train abs you must keep your core activated/flexed through the whole set. also don't forget to train the sides of your core, your lower back, glutes and hips, look up ab exercise pick some of them and do them, add planks too

Avoid crunches? I'd say this is false since since crunches isolate the abdominal muscles while sit ups involve the illiopsoas as well as the abdominal muscles. The majority of peoples illiopsoas is much stronger than their abs so the hip muscles are doing the majority of the work during the sit up. I mean, the reason you do crunches is to isolate the abs without the help from the hip muscles.

For hanging leg raises use ab slings aka ribraps if you can't hang long enough. I use them all the time. Allows me to hang longer and can do side knee raises and shit for obliques. Might look homo using them in a gym though but who gives a fuck.
