I've never done shrugs. How am I supposed to do them? More or less weight than deadlift? And can they be done with a mixed grip or do I need to get some wrist straps? Only have a barbell, no trapbar, dumbbells, etc.
Also when should they be done in a program? I assume the main major lift that they could interfere with would be deadlift, and possibly rows and OHP. So do them after deadlifting? Or just any day so long as it's not within 1-2 days of deadlifting?

Makes sense, but my main reason for doing them is to strengthen my upper back and prevent scapular extension and rounded upper back during deadlifts.

I have this problem. My ass is too big from squats and I can't shrug in front of me because I hit my dick or nuts. I've read that you should put your body on a slight angle but then I feel like I start rounding my back when I go heavy. I've just been using 45 pound plates at my sides and it is OK.

every time i do DB shrugs it feels like my spine in being compressed but if I do BB shrugs im fine, but my grip gives out on BB shrugs so i have to do them for 12+. fug.

This. You can shrug at the top of your deadlifts, and if your working weight is too heavy to do that, then you can just do it during your warmup sets.
