in the uk you apply to 5, the ones that want you give you offers eg AAB and then you do exams and get results

you can apply to however many you want, but you have to pay an admission fee for each one.
it's been a while but from what i remember it was mostly:
-SAT/ACT scores (these are standardized bullshit tests that literally test nothing and are run by a company that has a monopoly on education and standardized testing, and so are more concerned with making money than actually properly testing anything worthwhile)
-essays about all your extracurriculars and how good of a human being you are
-essays from your parents/teachers/priests

then they either admit you, put you on a list, or deny you.

you go to college and you just decide a major and take the classes you're supposed to.

I got A maths D physics D futher maths. I applied for physics. had offers at kings and ucl. Now going to do a foundation year at queen marys.

Must be nice to actually be able to get into top unis based on merit.
In the US the top deciding factors are whether you are black or a sports star, of course followed by lesser considerations such as grades and standardized test scores.

US system is completely retarded
all based on the equivalent of mocks and coursework, graded by your teachers so nothing is standard and people applying to uni have to do the SAT which is like an IQ test
if you're applying to ivy leagues everyone has about the same SAT score so they admit you based on your personal statement

we also have AP exams which are equivalent to A-levels but are 100% optional and you have to study for them on your own, I applied to british unis using those and my SAT subject test scores (kinda like GCSEs but also 100% optional)

A* in Computer Science
A in Maths
A in Further Maths
A in Physics
