Random killings are pretty easy to get away with. It is when you murder your brother-in-law when you and your wife were the only people in the country house that you get caught, oh btw CSI isnt real, unless the victim is famous or poltical there isnt that much tech involved. The biggest risk is hand prints if you are in the database, but that is easy to avoid, the second biggest risk is DNA, which is also easy to avoid if you kill on the street and not after a struggle on the couch. The whole "they will find fibers" or "match your walking pattern from footsteps " or "ballistics" is bullshit.
The local forensics team shows up, dusts for prints, looks for any blood or seaman for DNA. And if they dont find any, case closed unless someone had a motive or a witness
