Depends on the person and the only way to truly know if you're getting enough protein is to buy protein strips.
Generally, the amount of protein you need is a lot lower than people will tell you as long as you're getting protein from sources with a high PDCAAS. It's better to be over than under though, which is why people recommend so much

I never claimed that I'm some superstar, just what I've learned by tracking my protein intake over the years.
In my case, if I get at least 50g a day, I'll be fine and will not lose mass or strenght

IIRC studies showed 0.86g/lb bodyweight was good, although you can get less and be perfectly fine. I'm 188 lbs and normally get around 150ish grams
if you're bulking with plenty of carbs and/or fats I think you can go a little lower than the online consesus
if you're cutting you should keep it high both for satiety and lbm preservation
I've personally never used them, but I think you just piss on them and they tell you if you're nitrogen positive (protein excess), negative (not enough) or somewhere in the middle.

You really don't need more than 0.8 grams per pound of bodyweight, but the general rule-of-thumb errs on the side of caution, so 1 gram per pound of bodyweight -- but that's all assuming you're training hard all week every week.
