I'm approaching 2pl8 bench but feel like my chest has not grown very much. I'd like to start doing bench press with dumbbells but am confused bc every time i see a vid of someone doing it they're using low weights. My gym does not have any dumbbells so I can't really try it, but if you can bench 225 lbs with a barbell will it be a challenge to dumbbell bench with 50 lbs on each arm? Will I need to buy one of those giant robot hand block things to keep upping the weight?
the last time I did that it felt like my sternum was going to snap in half. I've read that you should go parallel but that also you should go until you feel a stretch in your chest, which for me is below parallel. do I need to get past the sternum pain or am i just obviously doing them wrong?

I dumbbell press 50 on each arm and I'd never be able to bench 225 >inb4 noob

I am DYEL as fuck and have been struggling with 115lb incline bench so I switched to dumbbells for a while and can do 42.5lbs for sets of ten. If I can do that then you can absolutely do more than 50lbs.
Dylan Ross
you're doing them wrong

Keeo doing barbell bench. Add a dumbbell squeeze. Squeezes contract your pecs in the direction they run so you can get better hypertrophy, whereas be ch takes advantage of the way the muscle is coiled to drive the motion so you'll grow your lower and outer pecs but maybe not so much the center which is what makes them look juicy. Hope this helps, I'm only speaking from personal experience and scooby wisdom.

Dips do nothing but make me feel like I'm going to completely snap my shit up

Probably more like 70-80s but then it starts becoming difficult to get them into position.

NiggAs pls help, I can barely bench 140 lbs but I can manged to DB 65 lbs for 8 reps and incline DB press 60lbs for 6 reps.
Hunter Morales
You're doing em wrong, though i used to get sternum pain and just kind of worked through it so idk

>Gym has barbells but not dumbells I'm sorry you what?
Jordan Flores
Dont listen to This retarded faggot OP. If you feel pain in your sternum during dips DO NOT FUCKING DO THEM THAT LOW! Reduce rom or dont do them.
Cooper Hughes
typically you do them until your elbow is on the same height as your shoulder. You need to lean forward a little bit

Help what?

>not even a 2 pl8 bench yet >small chest
expected buddy, a 2 pl8 bench is noob weight, literally anyone can bench 2 pl8 for 1 rep within 3 months. When you are doing 2pl8 for 4x10 or 3pl8 1 rep then you will start having chest gains. P.s. dumbells are a meme

t. sub 2pl8 bench
Xavier Ross
DB is like 90% of BB weight
Caleb Wright
>tfw separated shoulder so can't bench without clicking and grinding
>literally anyone can bench 2 pl8 for 1 rep within 3 months Wrong. Maybe if youre 230 lbs, on gear, or previously trained
Dylan Davis
I did it in a couple of months (1pl8 to 2pl8 1rm) and my weight fluctuated between 80-85 kg. When I struggle maxed 1rm 2 pl8 my chest was still pretty small, but now I do it for reps and closing in on 2.75 pl8 max my chest has grown a lot

If dips hurt you do not try and work through it. There’s other ways to train your chest. My sternum was fucked for like 3 months.

this, and bear in mind there's two variations. One that hits your chest more, and one that hits your tris more depending how upright your torso stays throughout the movement.

OP, if you haven't got access to dumbbells then try this:
Get your 10 rep max on the bar. Really focus on the stretch on the way down and rep out as much as possible Drop the weight by just enough that you can hit another 8+ reps (minimum) and repeat, really focus eccentric Drop the weight again and repeat Do this until you only have the bar on.
If you really want to kill your chest then keep going in reverse, adding the weight back on and trying your absolute hardest to get even a couple of reps out.
