Well i used to think the exact same thing about it. Another consideration is that through scientific improvement we'll have common gene editing in a 100 years at most. So in the history of mankind we will have had about 200 years of relative evolutionary stagnation.

Other things are that a huge amount of diseases are due to mass human settlements or industrialization, so people who would have survived a thousand years ago might now die and finally physical fitness isn't the sole measure of worth. I spend a lot of time on fitness but fully respect someone who doesn't but excels mentally. I'm not going to pretend to be superior to some obese nobel prize winner.
