Freestyle or folk? Shoot right after the whistle, anticipate whistles on stand ups (folk), don’t be afraid to cheat for gut wrenches before whistles (Greco//free), be an asshole and club heavy hands without opening yourself for shots - you should be “striking” the back of your opponent’s neck with your forearm bone so it stuns him, when forced out make sure you sprint back to the middle to fuck with your opponent’s head. Wrasslin’ is conditioning heavy no matter if your philosophy is Iowa, OSU, or Funk style.

Minor tips, but if you’ve put the work in practice - you’ll be alright. Good luck OP.

I’m competing in folk.

How old are u?

Also make sure you don't let the other guy overwhelm you.

God bless you user, whether you win or lose, you're a real man and ten times what anybody on this board that debates lifting for aesthetics will ever be.
You are an athkete and I admire you. good luck my anonymous brother, I wish you the best.

Im 18

NOTHING OTHER THAN 100% CONFIDENCE, TAKE EVERY SHOT LIKE YOU KNOW YOU'LL HIT IT, SPRAWL YOUR BALLS ON HIS HEAD IF HE DARES TO TRY TO HIS LEG.

FRONT HEADLOCK HIM AND RATTLE HIM AROUND LIKE HIS YOUR LIL BROTHER AND YOU JUST CAUGHT HIM JERKING OFF INTO YOUR SOCKS

Do have any tips for break down you opponents from top postion

18 is past the curve to be competing in folk, it requires a lot of conditioning whilst free/greco tend to rely a bit more on athleticism. Are you a BJJ guy trying out a wrestling tournament? If so, kudos to you bro.

>Never let the opponent think you're gassed
>Always focus your defense on your leading leg because unless you're heavyweight 95% of the time the opponent is aiming for that fresh single leg takedown. If they get their hooks in on that leading leg the hard part is over for them
>Bully em with your forehead
>torque their head down, when they pop up go for a shot
>Head goes, body follows
>Don't reach back, don't cross your feet

Move them, pressure in and wrist control, set up but plenty of hand fighting so setting up is easier and ou tire them out. Commit to moved

I’m been training folk for about 3 to 4.5 months. I have bjj background but I don’t us it that much due me being a former defensive guard grappler.

It depends on your somatotype, I was an endomorph so I liked a lot of wrist rides but never through in legs once in my career, ever. I was a big fan of mat returns even though it tires you the fuck out - it also gasses your opponent though.

If I was to break it down to simple steps - basically “drive” your opponent’s weight towards his hands without losing your balance, it’ll be harder for him to stand up. Don’t be afraid to cheat and lock hands on bottom, just unlock if the ref is looking.

t. mediocre ex-D3 wrestler

I’m between a mesomorph and ectomorph.

Maybe throwing in legs might work for you since you have a BJJ background, but if you didn’t drill it I wouldn’t try it, stick to what you know.

Also, coming from BJJ/MMA you might have been taught that sprawls are for takedown defence, when in fact they are the LAST RESORT. Posture is key - head, hands, hips (three lines of defence).

Basically, you want to wrestle like a T-Rex (this is how I teach it to kids), squat posture leading with your head, don’t lead with your arms they are for hand fighting. Your head should be following his, if he can’t get past your head, he can’t shoot - and snap downs are rare since your opponent has to be significantly stronger than you.

If he gets past your head, your hands are the next line, followed by the hips (sprawl).

I’m really tall for my weight class . What’s the best way keep my opponent out.

Still by wrestling as a T-Rex. You might have longer reach but longer levers have less leverage than shorter ones. The best wrestlers never stop moving their feet, circle circle and take your shots when you see them. Remember to chain your shots as well.

In my career I scored more on this simple technique far more than anything else: high-single, if that fails, chain to a knee tap, if they fails, the high-single is there again, or a duck under to a mat return. You don’t have to drop your knee to shoot or score. I scored a sweep single twice, a double twice, and a low single maybe once in 8 years.

I’m little bit worried because i’ve had ring for past two weeks and I just back to train two days ago.

T rex, because it will reduce the risk of the flaws of being lanky where you're "weaker" in fighting against a man let but your torso and leg length will distance your hips from some autist who prides himself in Iowa tier bullshit of shoot until they quit bullshit.

t. 200x d1 and freestyle pleb who let his team mate take the spot and get dusted at trials while I drunkenly screamed at the computer since it wasn't on tv at the time. My kid is being flown around and making house with my technique because I stole his childhood but he loves it so I dont give a fuck. Vicarious etc.

You know how to work from a sprawl?

Correction on my earlier post since I'm drunk and waiting for my food but be lanky but know your leverages and advantages. Still train for strength because you have no clue how good your ankle pick can be if you play coy and let them underestimate your reach. Keep it a stale mate and let them give stalling, who gives a fuck. All it takes is that one time your dude realizes your hand can reach further than he expects then you win my 1 or 2.

But your ground game gotta be the shit or else you will be bent in half and fucked even on riding time if you can defend.

Hope you are black in this case, fuckers always were explosive as fuck and I got plenty broken noses and fractured orbitals from riding them on top.

Leg rides are the shit too, but that's my hard on.

He said he's a bjj defensive guard player. That means he just lies on his back.

You sound like an OSU-style or funk guy. You should give MMA a try, I don’t see many Iowa-style guys with successful fighting careers. Buddy of mine wrestled d1 for two years and went 9-0 ammy and just won his pro debut.

You are super close. I was "one of those" that didnt appreciate American wrestling and "hugged saitievs cock" but the results showed.

To OP get super fucking technical and get great conditioning to go toe to toe with the mini hulks and you can survive on the world stage where everyone fucking roids.

Kek that been practically my game plan . It pretty nice see someone have similar strategy when it comes to wrestling.

I used to be notorious for crossface pins. -ptskkk- back in the day. I had to quit cause I hurt my elbow and now i cant really even throw a ball.

But yeah op don't skip cardio cause if you can't pin them make sure they get tired before you. Pretend the guy slapped your gfs ass.

Did Kyle Dake roid in d1?

no

He’s amazing, likely the GOAT or close to it. American wrestling is lacking but we have our moments. All foreign wrestling is pretty good but it’s not perfect - like how Imar kind of mimicked Yazdani with the Iranian undertook, fun to watch though.

where do you teach?

All depends how good you are at dirty wrestling. Pain compliance moves are a must and taps or bitch ass ref stoppages always leans to your favor. If the short fuck is willing to fracture your sternum with a straight double or rip your head off with a dick headlock or fracture your collar bone with a chicken wing on top for a lanky guy, you better be pro at stopping their pitbull charges with a head check and literally entwining their legs into easy rolls to end the match or to fold their cervical spine in half from up top with the right leverages lanky people provide..

Also dave schultz is my hero and i mastered the front head lock and i tapped countless people in a match and passed out more. I lost several no name tournies for using it but the coaches after a couple bottles of booze gave me props since it was honestly baller as fuck that I slept someone.

dont get pinned

I usually a scarf hold “choke” and try to squeeze the shit of my opponents.

Dave Schultz front headlock was so badass it was used as a submission in MMA. Matt Hughes slept Ricardo Almeida with it, and that’s when Brazilians were tearing up MMA.

Just keep an eye out in the next Oly trials my kids might make some noise. My daughter isnt as strong as the Cuban or "international" teams that have fucking pro doping dodging but I told her to keep her fucking mouth shut and not blog about it. My son on the other hand knows his shit and everyone decent was doping in high school by that point so I'm not that concerned.

check his oil

Theres a reason why he was the first and best to win tsibli twice.

When anyone gets you in a front headlock you're either thinking watch your legs for an easy cradle or watch your legs for a knee tap via bull rushing forward and planting your weight on your knees or a throw by if he baits it well enough for you to push forward. That's why the main counter is 3 point guards, the cues obviously are when the guy in headlock lifts his one arm up to attempt a drag or pull your arm down right?

No threat is as evident where you are at risk of literally passing out because of lack of oxygen from a legal move. I mastered that cunt like a battered wife.

SQUEEEEEEEEZE

Whats the diff between catch and freestyle? Is there a superior style out of all them?

And the best part about that was the fact that if you are good enough with it, after 1 headlock you can actually intimidate them enough to where even if you get it good and you can scramble left or right with good head drive for a single on either side, by just snapping down your opponents head and attempting it, their fucking legs stand up and you can single leg or high crotch easy.

Dave taught me that technique, "pick your poison" get choked or get taken down lol. Back when I was a kid and I kept all his tapes from my dad who was great friends with him. Fucking wish he was here, things would be different
.. :(

Catch is sub I believe.

The best style is ambig... all depends what your result you want. If its combat, Greco and freestyle mix. Folk is a meme to protect American parents from broken neck lawsuits because we cant suplex for shit.

Catch is basically submission wrestling. As far as the best one, I’d argue it’s folk for 3 main reasons:
1. The takedown
2. The mat returns
3. The riding
Greco definitely has its uses and probably translates better day 1, and freestyle wrestlers are likely more athletic but less conditioned (if that makes sense) than Folkstyle guys, but if you watch foreign wrestlers compete in MMA they can rarely keep a guy down. Khabib learned folk rides from Cormier and other camps in the US, Askren did so well because of his returns and riding. BJJ scout did a good series on folk for MMA.

However, MMA wrestling is completely different compared to all forms of competition wrestling. GSP is considered one of the greatest wrestlers of all time in MMA and only competed in a few recreational freestyle matches.

You got to meet Dave? What was he like? I met Mark, he’s definitely on the spectrum - a real space cadet.

You didnt need to know a half nelson or any leg laces for mma. The Canadian team literally trained him to do clinch work which meant Greco and single/double legs with a folk and freestyle mix. Over under hooks isnt hard and just having knowledge of head fighting and pressure gives you the advantage when you press them against a cage.

All of his takedowns are easy shots but he gets them off fucking insane setups so whatever. If his wrestling was as great as his JJ game I could see that but his subs are fucking ass.

I was young when he died but from the family VCR tapes I have at house parties he was the life of the party and mark was the autistic guy who lurks pol or v to be honest. I'm really surprised mark didnt shoot him really.

Kek, I could definitely see Mark lurking pol

How autistic are we talking?

if your strong learn the gator roll and keep doing over and over for points until you win. if they suck that is

Mark lived in Dave's shadow and my mom had moments where we did interventions because he was sperging that bad in private. He was as high functioning as it gets when he wanted to keep it on but when he turned it off it was just fucking awkward. I was 10 when he was over one time and I remember he would reorganize the yellow legos for my younger brother and wouldn't let me touch it but he let me play with the blue ones only and after lunch he switched it around and went to run for conditioning and came back and took all our legos I think he threw them away.

P.S dave and guys who were in his shape were the last breed of guys who didnt do a cycle of roids. Kenny monday who was one of the few who beat him when dave was old was a young buck who went on the juice along with a lot of guys to beat the others especially since you had to run a gauntlet including worlds to get notoriety.

Anyways gnight you fuckers I'm glad wrestling is still alive. Keep Dave in your hearts, he was honestly the fucking coolest uncle you wish you had.

Thanks for sharing man. Way to keep him and the sport alive in your family too.

freestyle is shit

fuck their dad before hand, the mental element of you being superior to their dad will win you most games
