Up until about the 1980s you only went to university for a specific reason, engineering, law, medicine, etc, that was the bulk of university students, everyone else just went to technical schools or trade schools, and there was nothing wrong with that, the university degrees actually meant something, they held value, it was respected
Now? They open up a thousand different units and hundreds of different useless majors that have zero real world application, add in the fact that everyone wants that highly respected university degree, now suddenly peope realise they can get that highly sought after university degree by takin on debt to do some easy worthless units and then collect a degree and be able to say you are a university educated person...
The worst part of all? Even though its worthless an employer is still going to want you to have SOME kind of university degree to even be considered for hire, so you HAVE to waste your time getting something useless even if you just want a normal non-university required job
