Those sports all discourage and punish physical contact. Football has so much that concussions became a major concern for players.

As a former semi-professional rugby player. American footballers wear armor because its a lot more dangerous sport, the reason being a lack of rules that regulate unnecessarily dangerous contact. Mainly because bodycheck is allowed as well as contact above the shoulders.

These regulations don't hinder the gameplay but improve player health greatly.

Because you'll hurt yourself if you launch your body at someone. And as a rule you have to make an attempt to wrap up the ball carrier with your arms. So a good form tackle is the way to go to take down the opposition without injuring yourself and without a penalty.

Have you ever punched a punching bag as hard as you can without a glove on? Do that, and compare it to with a glove on. The glove makes you hit harder, partially because it makes your fist heavier, but mostly because it lets your body actually punch as hard as possible. Without the glove, your body mentally holds you back for fear of breaking your hands. It's the same deal with football pads. They add 10 pounds to the player and allow them to hit way harder without the risk of self injury. This is the same reason that boxing with gloves on is actually more dangerous than bare knuckle boxing, at least to the brain and organs. Sure, bare knuckle has a lot more cuts and bruises, just like rugby players, but it doesn't deliver the same type of blows.
