You can also do this if you feel lightheaded, weak, dizzy, nauseous, etc., on shorter water fasts. Don’t do this while intermittent fasting.

I have a question about the keto diet.
If ketones are so superior to glucose. Why does the brain does everything in its power to not use it?
Is it just an emergency fuel to make you smarter and find food? Would it really make sense to run on "emergency mode" all the time?

Why?
Don't reference clinical studies for one topic and then make a health claim about something else without first looking at its clinical studies. Saccharine has had many studies done on it and there's never been any evidence that it's unhealthy except when taken in insanely enormous amounts for a prolonged period of time. Stevia is in the same boat and a "natural" alternative if that sounds more appealing for some reason.
And no, the body isn't somehow tricked into raising insulin levels when you consume artificial sweeteners.

Not necessarily significant, but the recommendation is no sweeteners for those who are highly insulin resistant as any spike can raise insulin for a prolonged period. For veteran fasters or lifters the artificial sweeteners are likely fine.

I don't know of any evidence for artificial sweeteners raising insulin tricking the brain into releasing.
It'd be like saying that you can eat a really bad tasting piece of food full of sugar and trick the brain into not releasing insulin.

"But, if you are susceptible, then hunger starts in the mind. This is known as the cephalic phase response (CPR). ‘Cephalic’ refers to the brain – so these are measurable physical responses to the suggestion of food and lasts for about 10 minutes."

Similar to how smelling food can cause a stomach to growl, so can smells, or even thoughts cause a small insulin response, which is something we want to avoid during a fast.

Artificial sweeteners are fine, but not optimal.

I don't think the vast majority of people need to pay attention to something like that. What's important is what's effective. If using artificial sweeteners means that people are able to stay away from caloric foods for a longer period of time, then people should use artificial sweeteners in order to help them achieve their goals.

I agree, I find it difficult to do a prolonged fast if I use sweeteners personally, so I avoid them. If they help, then use them, compliance is important.

yeah, it's the 5:2 diet. better than IF, but slower than extended fasting for weight loss. just don't binge, eat normally on your eating days.

Whats your exercise routine while drinking snake juice? Will walking do for now as you get used to a new routine?

I assume snake juice is only for those exercising heavily/sweating heavily and not casual exercise or none at all

snake juice is recommended for any fast over 72 hrs.

The snake juice basically supplements electrolytes so you dont feel like shit during long term fasts and reduces the risk of heart failure and reduces the effects of refeeding syndrome.

I do a hour of basketball (drill work/form shooting) on fasting days, I drink about a liter extra of snake juice for a total of 3 liters. You can get away with 1.5 - 2 liters if you arent doing heavy exercise but omitting snake juice completely is not recommending. Not only will you feel like shit (nausea, headaches, moodiness) but there's a real chance you fucking die if you go too long. Look at google and search water fasting deaths, all those faggots didnt use snake juice.

If you are doing 24s or 48s, you could skip the snake juice as long as you feel good and are getting enough salt and potassium from your veggies on your eating days.

Sweeteners give some people a fucking huge craving for anything. I once drank a Coke Zero before sleeping, and ended up having a dream where I was gnawing at a chair's leg. That's just how huge the craving is.

I drink a liter of snake juice a day with slow sips and a smaller portion of salt with max potassium. Im not sure if any results are to be expected but I can definitely say i feel better than before. No more bloated or sick feeling

yes you will see results with very little activity while doing a prolonged fast, its far from optimal but it will work. Prolonged fasting actually increases BMR and is protein sparing, the larger you are the more protein sparing occurs.

I'm pretty sure I read that after 72 hours is when your body goes into ketosis? Is it possible to go into it sooner? I was IF fasting for a few days before my water fast but eating very small meals, like 2 eggs and a piece of toast and that was it for the day. I'm currently about 56 hours into my first ever WF and just kind of surprised at how little hunger I'm feeling.

Ketosis can start as soon as 48hrs, but largely depends on the glycogen stores in your liver.

Sorry if this is a dumb question but is that potentially something to be worried about or should I just take it as a blessing and push on. I've been a sedentary lardass before this so just a little concerned about what this might do but I'm honestly feeling great.

72 hours will mean pretty much any person will be in ketosis after this time, which means the liver will be producing ketone bodies and you will be burning fat.

Keto adaptation can take up to two to three weeks where your skeletal muscle, the brain and the majority of organs are running on ketone bodies.

If you take electrolytes, fasting is quite safe for even extended periods, take your time and research. If you feel awful, have a lower carb/ zero carb refeed and start again. The discord is a good support mechanism if you have particular questions.

Not even. It’s taken me 5 days to get into ketosis before. If you ate tons of carbs and sugar, be prepared for a wait before ketosis happens. Ketosis doesn’t occur at a set time. It occurs when you’ve run out of glycogen.

Thank you guys. Since starting here I've decreased a full dress size and my appetite is dramatically decreased. I've eliminated most of the chub I wanted to. Really I have no complaints at all. Started on ADF and transfered to OMAD after most cravings were eliminated. Now I eat a light breakfast and a light lunch and am never really hungry. As it should be.
It's a great way to break all your bad habits and reset your appetite to an appropriate maintenance level.

yes, stop, do not fast on water alone. Add 1/2 tsp of salt to a litre of water and sip it. Have a small snack, avoid sugar/carbs.

When fasting make some 'snake juice' which is 1/2 tsp of both potassium and sodium chloride in 1 L water, sip it during your fast. If you run out, make more. Feeling lightheaded or nauseous is almost always sodium deficiency.

pickles are a good snack if you are low on salt btw, just not the sugary kind.
