Looks like a turtle op
What kind of terdle
Male 3 toed box turtle, hes looking for a female, or most likely heading for a hibernation area.
I save turtles, probably 50 or more a year, i know just about every breed in the usa.
Forgot to mention he is atleast 13 years old, possibly much older 20-30 give or take at oldest
that's a fucking tortoise retard
That's a turtle, user.
No, it's a terrapin you retard
OP here he is not the best swimmer lol
Yeah box turtles dont really enjoy swimming
thats a rad dude
Box turtles are bad swimmers, they have very little webbing on their feet and are heavy. Do you have a grassy area near the pond with bush and stuff he can look for bugs in and stuff? He'll enjoy a habitat like that more.
Wheres a good place for me to put him I dont want him to get ran over or drown in my pool
What the hell? Did you just kill it???
Is this a wildlife thread? I am very worried about this monarch
comfy pool m8
do you have some sort of box to keep him temporarily?
Do NOT put him in the pool it looks like there's an orca in there which will eat the turtle
No he is fine lol
Orginal
Thats tough, what direction was he facing when you found him? they generally know where they are going unless he is looking for a mate, this time of year idk i doubt it.
Also are you in a neighborhood? are there any woods or fields or anthing nearby, preferably in the direction he was facing? Take him to the nearest "safe" wooded area, or field ect.
Do not take him far away, they will literally be lost. Are you in a urban setting?
Oh okay, I thought you drowned it....
They submerge their heads to drink, they can swim some, and they are generally good at holding their breath. Just dont leave them in long, or without a way out.
Alright
Origningal
I think you should call him Franklin
Why are you screenshotting pictures from your camera?
Im kind of a self taught expert on Box turtles, i have glued them back together even after being hit by cars.
I feel sorry for box turtles more than any other species in North America. They take 7 years to sexually mature to even reproduce. Its also incredibly HARD for them to find a mate. They ltierally have to look for years and years. When they do mate they only have to mate once, then the female is fertilized for the majority of her life, she can lay eggs once or twice at most a year.
Invasive species like Armadillos root them out and eat them. Bascially everthing eats baby box turtles. If you find one cosnider yourself lucky many people will never even find one in the wild.
They mostly die by predators as eggs or as babies. Whe nthey get older they hang around a small area for a few years. They go by landmarks, stars, and thunderstorms to understand their location, and the time of year.
Cars and mowers and farming equipment have decimated their numbers. Its not really known how long they will survive as a species. Highways dividers literally divide the populations.
more than 50% of all sexually mature turtles die from cars. its sad as many people try and kill them.
They can get lost, people will with good intention move them miles away to "safe" places, only then the turtle is lost. It doesnt know where mating locations are, plant clusters that it likes or good areas to hibernate. Over hal begin basiclally a death march to find their way home, most of the time they die.
Disease also decimates turtle populations in the NE, with few and fewer baby turtle being found every year.
Ornate box turtles are uniquely American, they have been hit the hardest, as people not only kill them but take them as pets and sell them. Unlike other box turtles, Ornate box turtles dont like forrest really, they thrive in plains with lots of cow turds, as they eat the bugs off of them.
Would it be a good idea to have one male and two females and release the babies into the wild? I have tons of different turtles here but i only saw a box turtle once in my life
Look at this little dude! You have to protect it. Give it a blanket and tuck it in.
Thanks for the genuine laugh.
No just get a male and some females let him breed them then release them really close to where you find them that would be the best thing you can do to help box turtles.
