Have you seen some of the tents that pass for dresses? That's what they're talking about. Usually small up to xl costs the same, but 3xl and 4xl starts to need a whole different assembly line.

I guess that makes sense. I almost got up to needing 3XL (down to large) but I don't remember if they were cut/stitched differently.

Just in terms of size it needs more cloth to cut from. Really supersized clothing is expensive because it's a niche products. Fatties know they're freakishly large and they can't deal with it.

That would make sense if it was hand sewn. More material = more cost.

In a factory setting, they usually use the same size bolts of cloth and just cut the whole garment from that.

I'm not sure how it works for huge clothes though. Do they use larger bolts of cloth or two separate bolts and stitch them together (ie front and back).

There's also economies of scale. There's a lot of fat people, but not too many people needing 6XL clothes so a) it will be expensive because it's niche (and less competition and b) if they do require separate equipment, that will be more expensive too.

That’s the thing nobody thinks about. It’s not only the amount of material/labor/effort that goes into making the commodity, there’s a whole infrastructure with real-ass overhead to pay, too.
One thing that’s never considered is that having a 4xl on a rack or a crate of them in your warehouse takes up room that could be used for products (clothes sizes small to xl) that have way higher turnaround rates. If everyone wore a 4xl, this whole thing would be flipped tipsy turvy

Generally the only people who are put on that kind of diets are people who are 600+lbs, but their caloric needs are somewhat inflated.
