I do this sort of inward movement with my legs when I squat because it seems to make it easier to push, but gives me pain to the side of my hips. Could it be flexibility or is it just bad form?

hard to tell without a video it sounds like you're deliberately doing a valgus movement which is OK within reason, but if you're getting abductor pain then you need to fix it. Have you tried banded squats to see if they help? Put the band around knees and do a few warmup reps
