You don't eat the ones grown in polluted water. They get turned into fertilizer. As far as what I eat, I'm from Maine. We have the largest commercial mussel industry in the US. I get mine directly from a mussel farm.

Abundance isn't the only factor. Shellfish go bad really fucking easy. Transporting them inland takes its toll.

Mussels are the actual worst shellfish to eat as they are completely indiscriminate in what they ingest. Clams and scallops are a million times better for you as they have extremely complex particle selection capability that excludes most pollution, harmful algae, etc.
