I think he just looks shit because he has a high body fat percentage. His lifts seem fine and he looks big at least. If he would take his diet more serious he could look decent.
Most of his thoughts on lifting seem reasonable to me from a rational/scientific standpoint. But I only lift serious for a few months so I don't have enough experience to judge it in the end.
I have the feeling that most studies are just not good enough to use as a basis for your training
People are just too different in their physiology and those studies mostly use average numbers.
I feel like most people will have to try out a lot of different things and "waste" time until they find out what works for them.

You should only do Shrugs if your main back lift is Chin-Ups and you don't do Rows.
I did this my first 4-5 months of lifting. It wasn't bad at all. The workouts took quite a while though
