How do I gain the confidence to do the workouts I actually want to do? How can I best train chest for pushups at bootcamp besides pushups?

Just embrace being a beginner and strive to learn. just do what you plan on doing and if someone is there, ask for advice. It isn't rocket science.

Do good research to learn proper form, rom, etc and no one will give a shit how much weight is on the bar. The only ones that get judged are half-reppers and ego lifters.

Just reaffirming this. Even the dudest of bros at the gym are focused on themselves and not you. In fact, they're usually pretty nice. I'm an anti-social skinny fat but the dudebros at my gym are some of the friendliest people I know. They know their shit too, so if it doesn't spill your spaghetti, say hi and make friends.

Ideally I need to do 72 or so pushups and run a mile and a half in 11 minutes, but at minimum I need 47 pushups and a 1.5 time of 12 minutes. I can do 37 pushups right now but towards the end they're cheaters and my mile time is total ass

I’m in the navy actually. You’re gonna lose a lot of gains in boot camp. Just focus on getting your sit ups and push ups good, and run time down. That way you can at least come out of there an e-2. Btw what rate did you choose?

I did JROTC in high school and have over 70 credits so I"m E-3 for sure. Haven't signed any paperwork yet but I'm looking at either CTR/T/M, IT or HM

If you are looking to join the military using weights is worthless until after you get through all the boot camp stuff. Just do pushups, pullups, situps, run and then walk with a weighted backpack

Everyone likes to see a newcomer in the gym, if anyone in there cares all it does is make them feel better about their progress, not feel contempt towards you. In any likelihood they'll be fully willing to help or give advice too.
Those who take fitness seriously are a pretty small group and a lot of us realize that and want to be supportive.
