how does one actually get into boxing? all of the gyms that sell themselves as boxing gyms in my city seem to be places that cater to the power yuppie casual crowd while charging extortionate membership fees ($200/month). i don't want to pay that much just to take 30 minute classes where a bunch of over the hill white collar female office workers punch the heavy bags in unison and then go jump rope for 10 minutes.

Boxing is a waste of time unless you're willing to risk brain damage by sparring with another opponent of superior or equal skill on a regular basis. It's not something you can really just do casually. You're better off just joining a somewhat reputable BJJ gym.

Find a real trainer. Most have gyms and will do like 1hr sessions I'm packages to make a living. I started 7 months ago and it's legit changed my life, best martial art/sport/workout on the planet hands down

Also this user is a fucking moron. You literally don't need to spar/take hits to get all the benefits of boxing

You're going to remain casual forever (not that is necessarily a bad thing), ask your trainer about glove shyness next time you work with him.

I'll remain as casual as I want to.

Well that is fine, there is no problem with that. But op clearly made a thread about getting into boxing for real, by which I assume he meant doing matches on the amateur circuit and the like. I am merely informing him of what is involved should he wish to go down that route.

One of the benefits of boxing is learning to fight. You won't do that without sparring

Fair enough, I'm simply saying he doesn't need to spar to start getting into the very real very grueling conditioning that comes with boxing. He can take it wherever he wants

bjj gyms are just as casual as your average casual boxing gym and are kind of a waste in that respect too

op you're best off taking baby steps, go and join one of those so called casual boxing gyms and just stick with it and once you develop a relationship with one of the trainers you can ask them to do individual instruction with you, then once you're in their circle you can take it to the next level if you wish. but I'm afraid the days of just waltzing into a legit boxing gym in the bad part of town and becoming an amateur level boxer within a year are long gone, it's honestly somewhat of a dying sport

I disagree with that. A well trained boxer who rarely if ever spars can absolutely hold their own in a random fight. Against another boxerequally well trained? Obviously not.

>it's honestly somewhat of a dying sport
:(

>this
Fighting an untrained person gives you an unfair advantage. Only use it in self defense.

Every boxing AND bjj gym in my city is a mcdojo and they all charge nothing less than $300 a month and are crawling with weirdo pink haired feminists and creepy looking aging hipsters with too many tattoos god I fucking hate this shit.

No joke man. I always say before I started training I'd have made a fool of myself in a fight. Now I'm honestly concerned that I could break an average sized males neck with a power right hook. It's very humbling

Damn dude what city? San fran?

I'm out in nyc there is a few good bjj dojos way out in Jamaica supposedly but it is honestly too far out of the way for me. But other than that yeah. And they're all pricey as shit.

I've had to deal with my fair share of drunken idiots looking for a fight in my bar. I usually ask them to leave, but force is necessary on some occasions.

If you want to get into golden gloves kind of stuff what this guy said () is true. If you just want to be able to defend yourself in a street scuffle just take one of those woman's self defense courses (not even memeing). Oh and watch this:

I feel bad for all the anons who pay so much for glorified cardio workouts. I pay 25$ a month and work out in a dingy basement below a gym, there’s a fair number of casuals you’d see at a McDojo but the coach doesn’t really spend much time with them, only the fighters and people sparring. Despite the dingy setting there’s all he heavybags it needs, a albeit small ring, 3 speed bags, double end bags, squat rack and free weights, lots of mirror space, and the squares painted in the floors for inside fighting practice. The coach is a short old man in a toque too, very similar to mighty nicks gym in the early Rocky movies.

>$25 a month to work with a legit boxing coach
Lol user where do you live Brazil?

Start when your 12 or 13, find a boxing gym in the hood, take your ass beatings, don’t quit.

Canada, people sparring pay less, people fighting multiple times a year go free, the casuals and drop ins pay for the rent and all the rest goes to supporting the club like equipment and helping the fighters train free or cheap. It’s 40-50$ a month I think for people who aren’t registered fighters

I should mention the coach takes none of the profit, he’s very well off from his career outside of boxing and puts a lot of his own money into his fighters too.

yea stay away from big commercial gyms. My rule of thumb is that if hot white women are doing it its probably not real. My coach is a promoter for Holyfield and charges me $40 for absolute kino training. Just put yourself out there and try to find a good gym in your area. And this is only relevant if you are seriously fucking training and trying to go into actual USA amateur tournaments. Boxing for fun/exercise will not give you fucking brain damage. t. Dean's list

>waltzing into a legit boxing gym in the bad part of town and becoming an amateur level boxer within a year are long gone
This is exactly what I did 3 months ago, and I’m scheduled for my first fight in feb. Wish me luck

Good luck user but please provide us with more details how you found your place and how much you pay.

Boxing is a sport that they show on TV. Literally just look up who coached the champions, then go join their gym.

Many boxers never spar or only spar lightly. You're stuck in some weird 1990,s boxlet mindset.

MMA gym is probably your best bet, as an added benefit you get to learn other martial arts too.

Well, it worked for Nigel Brnn. Or Kosta Tszyu. Etc. They became champions without sparring.

So much fucking trash OPINIONS. Just get into a boxing gym and get started. If you enjoy what you're doing then keep doing it. If not, then try a different fighting style. Just start...that's the big thing.

>Boxing for 10 years with handful of smokers
>1 stripe blue in bjj with nova uniao.

Where the fuck do you live? Every boxing gym in my area is in some ghetto area, it’s €2 a session

Who pays you to act so retarded?

Find a ghetto boxing club and join it.

is boxing really dying?

I’m in northwest Louisiana, it’s 100$ a month and I’m there every day for about three hours. It’s busy some days, and there are a lot of kids, but we have about 10-12 people who fight regularly and there are 1-2 pros who pop in from time to time. But the head coach works with everyone individually at least once a day.

Sacrifice 6 virgins, use strips of their heart as gloves.
Also the gym you are describing really sucks.
