Cardio is good for not having a heart attack and probably cancer.

It's ok for weight maintenance. It's not great for very substantial weight loss.

Cardiovascular health

Losing weight (Though no amount of cardio outside an hour of swimming per day could make up for a shit diet.)

It's good if you want to actually be an athlete inside of just looking like one

The key to getting the most "cost-effective" aerobic conditioning is varied activities.
Anaerobic conditioning/HIIT (have aerobic benefits as well) are also important to include.
If it's intense and/or extended enough, you do have to factor recovery from it into your training.
It's good for efficient energy systems; recovering faster between efforts like lifting.
It's good for being able to do cardio for longer, having higher work capacity, and feeling more athletic.
It's good for most sports.
It's good for blood-flow including erections, good for cardiac and respiratory health, a whole lot of other healths.
Too much, and especially too much of the wrong sort, can be quite detrimental (namely, speeds up ageing and wears down joints).

I play rugby so cardio for me is required. If you're getting laid doing cardio would be a good idea to help you in bed. Other than playing a sport and getting laid I can't see any other reasons

Swimming's fucking great if you're looking for healthy exercise that'll help with weight loss. Burns tons of calories and is super low impact.

imo cardio is one of the best things you can possibly do for your health and well being

- no longer get winded walking up stairs
- more endurance in any physical activity, including lifting (don't start to fucking suffocate during lifts)
- generally feel healthier, no longer get lightheaded when doing everyday things
- runner's high
- probably some shit with hormones

Marathon running and mid to long distance swimming are both highly cardio focused sports, athletes in each do a lot of cardio but in different activities, marathoners look terrible by and large.
That's just common sense. Not sure who would even do a study on something like that, marathon runners' joint condition or cortisol levels idk.

How long it will take for me to be able to run 3k in 12min or less?

Im not fat, been workingout for a year now so I have a good amount of muscle mass, but Im cardio-sedentary, i never do it. I have a physical exam in 2 months that requires me running 3k under 12min.

Go for an hour long pourposeful walk every day for a week. If your knees feel okay then do "Couch to 5k"
If your knees are killing you then do lunges and bodyweight squats M W F and walk for 30 minutes every day at a fast clip.
Then do Couch to 5k.

You can do that extremely fucking easy in 2 months. Start now and slowly build up. That’s barely more than two miles.

You'd be running at a pace of about 6:00-6:20 min/mile

If you've never run before, that pace is no joke.

I'd start running 5-6ks to build up a decent aerobic base. Just pack on the mileage and keep track of your pace. You should note during your 5k how you feel at the 3k mark. Start adding in speed work (google fartleks) as you feel more comfortable.

Stretch after each run, make sure you have good shoes. Injuries in the beginning are super common if you've never run in the past

Solid diet plus cardio is best for weight loss. I play full court basketball several times I week and it melts fat off especially when you approach single digit body fat

on top of what other anons have already brought up, aerobic cardio is great for mental health gains

Cardio is one half of the fight or flight response. It's generally seen as the lamer half and is adored by the physically weak and men that strive to look like deer. Although boring it feels kind of good after 15 minutes. i give it 2 stars for usefulness and 2 more stars for feel good, but i will have to deduct 2 stars because it's kinda gay so that leaves cardio with a 2 out of 5 star rating
