Meh, I'm zac effron-mode and in my very late 20s. I've been lifting hard since I was 18. In my opinion, 1/1/1 side/straight planks is just as good as heavy ab hypertrophy. I don't think they respond well to non-isometric exercise. Kinda like calves or forearms - go mountain bike or rock climb and they'll blow up 10x bigger than if you go for hypertrophy.
It's not that it's useless, it's just that there's at least 100 better things you could be doing.
Nobody know how to do planches. And the is no decent video explaining, you have to do lots of them to get it.
But once you get it, it's phenomenal.
To give you all an idea of what am I talking about, next time you do a plank, do exactly as you have learned, but focus on the FRICTION between your arms and the floor. Make it so your skin is the less streched as possible: so you arms aren't pushing foward nor backwards.

It's good if you start loading it by adding plates on your back.
It's good if you have mobility issues with your shoulders but want gain mass safely albeit slowly. Isometrics dont have motion in them so tendons and ligiments getting inflamed from repeated stress is not as much of an issue. But without the actual pump the hypertrophy is very limited.
Sliding mountain climbers are better.

Can I do planks to work towards doing a pushup? They work the arms aswell as the abdominals, surely?
Ive been trying wall pushups and knee pushups and incline whatever, but the angles and degrees are all inconsistent. usually too hard, sometimes my arms arent at the right angle etc.
Im a complete beginner. See a lot of mixed results from all over the iinternet. Some people saying they can do pushups because they did knee pushups, but wall pushups were terrible. Others sayiing Planks are the answer.
I'd say stick to pushup variations to learn pushups instead of usinf planks to do it. By all means, do planks, but for your abs, not specifically for learning pushups.
When I was a beginner, I learnt pushups by placing my arms on a table edge, then on gradually lower surfaces until I got to the floor. Focus on squeezing your biceps to your chest to activate your pecs on the way up.

Good, but once you hit about 90 seconds, you have acclimated to the work, and they aren't actually helping you anymore.
luckily, there are a bazillion variations, and many other exercises that will continue to tax your abs

planks are okay. If you can handle it, like in the picture, scoot your elbows forward, or if you're on your hands, don't have them directly under you. Have them a foot or two out front from normal. You get great activation that way.
I do machine crunch set, then superset it with 10sec plank, 20 plank jacks, 20 mountain climbers and back into a low (chest a few inches off the ground) plank. It's pretty brutal if your arms are in front of you slightly.
