I’d agree with this for the most part. It’s just a quick non hostile acknowledgment. Not friendly or mean, not ignoring or engaging. And I think part of the reason I do it is to let the other man know I am aware of him, I’m not a threat to him right now, but I am not blind to him.
With animals you should make eye contact - let them know you know they see you, then move away without exhibiting prey-like behavior. Not that I think about this in daily life, just now as I ponder.

I also agree it’s a white person move. Blacks are comfortable ignoring a passing person entirely. You need about 83 or higher IQ to have the ability to do “put yourself in their place” type abstract thinking. Which is why they can brutally murder without there even being a need (think gas satiation clerks that give up the money without a struggle but still get shot). With normal people there is some gut feeling that the other person is a person, and he is regarding you as you regard him. Hope that makes sense.
