So that, what exercises could improve my fencing performance?

Explosive cardio. You're moving about and jumping back and forth a lot, also high rep low weight upper body exercises to prepare you for doing a lot of movement with your weapon

I don't really get why people study HEMA.
Is it even competitive, or is it purely a reenactment type thing?

I was told that you have to do a fucking lot of squats

LARPing faggots and reenac nerds are another thing
In HEMA you actually hit the other guy with a steel blunt sword, and yes, it is competitive as fuck, even with the equipment you can fuck up your hands and arms

It's a little competitive, but not that it can be considered a sport. This is very much a reenactment type thing. Both it and Battle of Nations bugurt-type fighting are just a legacy of the Lord of the Rings generation. We started fighting with sticks in parks, then we started making better weapons, moved to LARPing or went historical. Then we grew older and richer and now it's a whole fucking movement all of a sudden. But I still feel like a 13-year-old who just saw the Battle of Helm's Deep and who's fighting with his friend on sticks.

olympic lifts, it will increase your explosivity.

Gym: General strengthening including specific exercises for strengthening supportive muscles.

Dojo/your backyard: lots of pell work to improve specific strength and speed.

I'm kinda new to this shit, I've only been in 1 tournament and I can easily tell you that the other dudes aren't afraid to hit you full force. Pretty fun if you ask me,

The explosivity sounds nice, I was thinking maybe train more my legs because of all the jumping.

Put your neck down on tracks or learn actual martial arts.

it can be really competitive if youre in a good school or an area with a lot of HEMA. i know in the us it isnt as big a thing but here in the netherlands a lot of people train more to win tourneys than for historical accuracy, which some people find to be a problem

>think HEMA is pussy nerd larp shit
>Watch Polish saber duels on YouTube
>Think HEMA is hardcore nerd larp Sport now

Realizing people used to do this shit with real swords God damn

HEMA is gay larping. Actual European martial arts are based as fuck tho. Olympic fencing, archery, wrestling, boxing. And I say that as a non European. And yet white boys doing lame ass virgin neckbeard HEMA crap instead or larping as Asians and doing Chinese/Jap/Fllip MA while ignoring their own legit ones..

Sadly polish sabers aren't that popular. Most guys fight with longswords or arming swords with shields.

look at this fucking NERD!!!!!!!!!!!!
HAHAHAHA

YOU FUCKING LOSER

>coldsteel weapons
>fencing helmets
>whatever the fuck that dude in the middle is wearing
Get outta here with this martian shit.

look up olympic fencing training, i've seen them do squat like exercises for explosive movement

is it explosive strength?

My new SPES fencing jacket has arrived and holy fuck I can't fight more than 5 minutes now, I should say focus on cardio.

Indirect improvements come from general increases in fitness from lifting and losing weight. I went from being gassed after 1 bout to 10 to making it through 6 bouts to 15 of DE in a tournament with a little to spare.

Direct improvements come from strength training legs and HIIT. Also fencing more, doesn't matter how fit you are if your motions are sloppy and excessive you'll always tire needlessly fast.

>HEMA is gay larping

Do you know what hema is?

He's probably from the US, who have a rich medieval history and sophisticated culture

Depends on the club maybe, mine is full of armchair historians and game of thrones fans.

General barbell strength training and gpp, body weight stuff and explosive body weight stuff will serve you well too
Flipping tires, burpees, box jumps, plyo push ups, dips, ball slams, chin ups, jumping lunges, prowler pushing(this builds huge explosive strength and endurance in legs), build up theelse until you can do them with a weight vest
I'd recommend compiling these in a circuit, if HEMA is like reenacting, and wrestling, you need huge amounts of endurance

*Huge amounts of endurance when carrying weight

Alot of HEMA people will recommend Indian Clubs and it is the closest analogue for essentially shoulder cardio and the constant repetition of drilling.

I use an extended dumbell handle (1 inch screw kind) with a 1.5 plate on one end. Stickfighting sinawali's are good too.

These are alternatives to just getting into an open space and training with your feder which is ofcourse the best option. Meyer cutting square moulinettes and that sort of solo drilling.

You're going to want a strong back for wrestling so squats, deadlifts and the press are the order of the day as always. I focus on shoulders a little more than most simply because of Longswords intensity on the shoulders but most fighting comes from your legs and back so squats and lunges are most important.

Threaded lunges with a kettlebell are perfect because you can lunge 'properly' for a fencer without the weight on your forward knee. A few other meme exercises I enjoy are the warrior club squat and especially the Jefferson squat.

Cardio is very important especially as a beginner but the more advanced you get the less endurance you need. After 6 years even after a break I find sparring low cardio intensive but originally it destroyed me and I was much fitter then. HIIT and cardio of your choice will get you overqualified for HEMA in no time (except wrestling, you're never fit enough for 10 minutes of wrestling).

The best solo exercise bar none (including literally training HEMA drills on your own) is bouncing a tennis ball against a wall like the Great Escape to catch and throw it again eventually building up to two tennis balls at squash game intensity while maintaining good fencing footwork and low stance. This will supercharge your fencing.

HEMA is gay and for nerds but its also an incredible and legit martial art and the most worthwhile one I've ever done including the big names like BJJ and JJ etc but I've been blessed with a GREAT club of experienced martial artists.

>here in the netherlands a lot of people train more to win tourneys than for historical accuracy, which some people find to be a problem

What the fuck is wrong with you western and Bavarian Europeans being faggots about absolutely everything? Why hold a goddamn tournament if the purpose isn't to win?

Flipping tires isn't any better than loads of other conditioning or strength training options that don't carry such a risk of a really fun elbow injury. Burpees are retarded. Box jumps aren't a shit ton better. Ball slams are fucking stupid. Plyo push ups are fucking stupid and vastly inferior to bench pressing. Any sort of lunge is fucking stupid. Circuit training is the pinnacle of faggotry.

Don't listen to this fucking dumb shit. Delineate your time between actual, dedicated strength training, purposeful conditioning, and specific HEMA (or whatever else physical activity you happen to be doing) practice. Don't do any of this hybrid, CrossFit Lite horseshit.

Rznning jumping throwing heavy rocks. Read the medieval books.
