Lithium therapy for bipolar is one of the few psychiatric treatments that actually works. It isn't a 100% certain to work, but for most it does.

You might not feel better on them right away, as they take away some of the energy you might feel from being manic or hypomanic. Some with bipolar react to negatively to loosing some of their "drive".

Other than that is it very benign for a psychiatric drug. It can be hard on the liver, but it's not poison.

Dude BD1 people can be more severe than schizos, much more. Every mental illness is variable, and the most extreme forms are the ones with useful clinical applications. I've just lived with dozens of people who were severely mental and they are not in control at all times. A paper cut and an amputation are functionally the same thing but on massively different severity. Same thing for mind stuff. Some people are depressed some stop responding to sensory stimuli.
