So guys, my trainer put the "seated behind the neck press" in my schedule. I remember reading this excercise will fuck up your shoulders so I looked into it. There are so many different opinions but is it really bad or, if done right, is it a safe excercise?

Please advise because he keeps saying it's not bad but I don't want shoulder problems in 10 years.

Klokov does it.
Settled.

sounds like all the more reason for this manlet novice to start at 0lb with this lift

It’s a meme exercise..start off with dumbbells if a newbie, move to seated shoulder press in front of head then when you’re experienced enough move to strict standing shoulder press. My credentials - (strict standing shoulder pressing 225lbs at 195lbs bw)

You have a trainer, I'm not going to bother giving a drooling retard advice.

If your form is correct, then it is fine.
Realistically, you should just be focusing OHP and then doing movements to hit the other deltoid heads.

It’s a difficult excercise (read: use lightweight) but is good for shoulders mobility. But you should have trust in your trainer otherwise why pay him?

>trainer
yikes

this

It's safe and effective if you have great shoulder mobility and take care of your rotator cuffs. Which, if you have a trainer I suppose is shit

It's too late for you my son.

ANDDD since you got a personal trainer you must be some mostly sedetary boomer who watches too much netflix and is on his phone all day. WHICH IN TURN means you have poor posture and lack shoulder mobilitym WHICH IN TURN MEANS that behind the neck presses are gunna snap the fuck out of your shoulder.

QUICK TEST, can you do pic related? If not don't do behind the neck presses.

If you have the shoulder mobility, and your rotator cuff is in good shape and strong enough not to let your humerus subluxate while doing it, sure go ahead

It’s fine if you have good thoracic mobility.

Better to do behind the neck push press. Same muscles, more intensity, less impingement.

why seated? wouldn't standing be better for you?

zero point in it
doing it behind your neck adds nothing in muscle activation

Can not do pic related. Close though.

been doing it for 2 years, shoulders feeling fine and shoulders growing. It hits your delts differently than military press, so do both.

I'll bite. Pressing from behind the neck puts a lot of stress on your shoulders. It differs from person to person whether or not this is going to fuck up your shoulders. Generally speaking, most people will fuck up their shoulders through shoulder impingement when putting up with these amounts of stress and will build up (chronic) injury. This depends on your personal, unique build, depending on variables I'm not going to list because I'm lazy as fuck and you can google it yourself. Do not listen to advice like even with that kind of mobility, you can still fuck up your shoulders. The only way to figure out if pressing behind the neck is good for you is by doing it and keeping an eye out for the consequences. On a general level, I would not press behind the neck, and I would not accept a PT that gives a noob behind the neck presses as an exercise. Demand your money back because he clearly is a scamming retard.

You could potentially hurt yourself if your thoracic mobility is poor, which it very likely is.

Tell your trainer you want to hit 1/2/3/4 in a x amount of months and have him tailor a program with mostly compounds including OHP. Most of what you should be doing should be with a barbell with minimal accessories.

And yes, in my experience behind the neck press is not good for your shoulders. Especially if you're not doing shoulder stretches.

I cant do this but i can klovov press, and do full snatchs no problem

Btw why do you guys hate trainers? I understand the generic bro telling you to do 4x10 of everything all the time, but if it's an actual prepared and experienced athlete it's a pretty good thing to have, imo

I remember in early 2000s we used to do all kind of fucked up behind the neck shit. Today my shoulder dislocate when it wants and it fuckin hurts. Thanks oral bodybuilding tradition.

I don't like trainers simply because it's a 6 month course to become a trainer in my country
Most of the curriculums of those courses is also not regulary updated with latest research papers so I can't really rely on them to know everything
There are great trainers of course, people who actively research the best things for their clients and are involved in the sports world but the trainers I've met just give a cookie cutter routine and give no fucks

DO NOT DO IT! DON'T!
do normal ohp instead, fuck what your trainer says

You can be an official PT in my country within 3 days if you're willing to spend alot of money. Some of the more prestigious, official educations for becoming a PT take longer. I know some guys who did that education, they now tell people when squatting high bar that their knees shouldn't go past their toes. That's why I hate PT's
