Will a sugar tax help to fight the obesity crisis?

Yeah, probably.
>Tax only applies to cane sugar and not corn syrup
Whoops
Google Philadelphia's sweetened beverage tax.
No it will not its gay and just makes shit harder to buy. Look at the Philly beverage tax
>tax
Depends how harsh it is.
A sweeping junk food tax that makes anything with refined sugar or HFCS as an ingredient like 300% more expensive might help. But a small tax would probably just result in healthier foods going up in price so stores can subsidize keeping junk food at the same price it is now, because addictive sugary foods make them more profit.
nah becuase they reason why people get fat is by eaing a calororic surplus.
sugar is not the main reason for overweight.
how can it be if its much easier for the body to store excess calories from the fat we eat?
not to mention that 1g of fat is double the calories from 1g of sugar.
You have to be retarded to think that sugar is the main reason for fat people and neglect fat from itself.
Just another way for goyim to send more fund to Israel
In the UK a large number of drinks manufactorers have cut the sugar in their drinks since the soft drinks suger tax came into force. This is evident in the less than expected revenue the tax has brought in.
Maybe, maybe not. My country (NZ) has been hiking tobacco prices by 10% every year, purportedly to reduce smoking rates. A pack of 20 is something like $30 now. We've seen a reduction, but not in excess of the general reduction you see everywhere else. If sugar addiction is anything like nicotine addiction I'd expect most people to just keep eating shit and to spend less money on other stuff. If you channel the revenue from a sugar tax into nutrition education or subsidising healthier options you might see a benefit, but I'd rate it as unlikely that a tax alone would be much use.
>Will a sugar tax help to fight the obesity crisis?
The last time someone tried to tax an Americans sugar 200,000 people died.
Lmao.
>tax to pay for government
>tax to make you do what government want you to do
>tax some products and give the money to others
>10 people vote to give 4 people's money to other six
TAXATION IS THEFT FUCK THE STATE
>If sugar addiction is anything like nicotine addiction I'd expect most people to just keep eating shit and to spend less money on other stuff.
Butsee it isn't. And sugar right now is SO CHEAP you can fucking stuff yourself with Twinkies for $10-trivial money. What if that cost $50 or $100 instead? Would people really keep buying sugar in huge quantities?
I live in the UK and I am currently under the boot of a sugar tax. It did not help fatties at all -- in fact, there seems to be more of them.
All it really accomplished was sending more money into the pockets of corrupt politicians and making sweet foods/drinks either taste like complete shit because they changed the recipe, or become more expensive. Now they are supposedly trying to implement a meat tax, on food like STEAK. Thanks nanny state, oppress us all under the guise of "helping" fat fucks.
>meat tax
It's time to overthrow your government.
I agree, but remember this is a country that bans butter knives and jails you for making anti-immigrant statements online. Won't be long until the British version of Holodomor, I reckon.
Sugar isn`t even unhealthy. Same shit as with saturated fats. Sugar is easy to disgest and freed from all antinutrients which all other plant based foots aswell as eggs contain. Its anabolic, doesnt leave any toxins in the body, is good for your brain, helps rasing metabolism, is a natural vegetable extract.etc.. Its a sign of tyrannism in the west that goverments wants people to stop eating this substance.
This. I feel like fasting removes all the downsides of refined sugar consumption
This. We need the cult of phsical fitness that NatSoc provides and bullying for those who are fat. That will do more help than a sugar tax
No. Fatties just need to stop fucking eating, fucking fuck man. Its that simple.
No, you statist fuck. Cut welfare for anything result from obesity.
based economyposter
Not by itself. We also need a flour refining tax.
With a society built on health and fitness. Big sugar and pharma would die in months. But this will sadly not happen unless 90% of spics and blacks are sent back to were they came and all white trash was sterilized.
>sugar tax
>Subsidize BASED foods
>Tax Relief if attending Gym atleast 3 times a week
>BPA and all harmful chemicals Banned/taxed
>Use revenue to create more gyms/Healthy foods n sheit
Turn USA into a Modern day Sparta
Typical statist strategy - burden everyone for the sins of a few bad actors because we might hurt somebody's feelings if we actually single them out. How about leave everyone alone who is not obese and just throw obese people off the dole? No free healthcare, no disability, no nothing. Until your body fat percentage falls within some reasonable norms, YOU GET NOTHING! Insurance companies, airlines, etc. are allowed to charge you more. And employers can fire you at will.
Well then I guess we know what we have to do
>>Tax only applies to cane sugar and not corn syrup
is this real?
It's gone a few ways
Either
>Manufactures have cut the sugar in the drinks to dodge the tax
>Cans/Bottles have been made smaller in the full sugar versions while Non-sugar remains the same
>Price of sugar goes up while non stays the same
>People bitch and moan and say they refuse to pay the extra tax so buy the non sugar instead.
So it's
>Lower sugar
>Smaller portions
>Higher cost for sugar
>People swap to non sugar versions
Tell me how it's failed when those are the outcomes
Moronic, tax people based on the circumference of their waist. As long as they keep their fat on track, they shouldn't be taxed... taxing products is EASIER but hurts healthy people.
We have a microcosm of this solution at my job. Food in the cafeteria is priced based on some indecipherable system of sugar / caloric content. Sugary or empty carby foods are unreasonably expensive, while some "healthy" or sugar-free items are likely sold at-cost or a small loss.
I can't say it works.. but perhaps in different circumstances. Most of the jobs are well-paying, so people probably aren't feeling the appropriate financial pressure. Disciplined eaters get to lunch on the cheap.. fat fucks shell out more for the same garbage they've always eaten, nothing changes.
No, like everything, it will just create a black market for sugary snacks.
You fucks have to learn you can't legislate personal choice away.
Archer, Daniels, Midland™ will fucking bury every politician that even thinks about going against corn.
has taxing alcohol / tobacco stopped people drinking and smoking?
That's what they said about Big Tobacco, you woe-is-me jaded fucks need to choke to death on a literal black pill.
No
It's a regressive tax and people will just work around it.
right wing death squads will
who gives a fuck if it deters people or not, the main point of it should be to provide more money to the obesity epidemic and the absolute strain it places on US healthcare
Or just remove the cost and provide them absolutely zero support
>promote/subsidize the companies that make sugar
>tax the people for buying it
day of the rope when
Statists will only learn after manlets learn
Actually yes. I'm not a fatty but since the sugar tax (UK) all the soda companies basically took out half sugar and replaced with half artificial sweeteners. Artificial sweeteners have like a really bitter gross taste for me so I stopped drinking them completely. Although I'm so pissed they ruined Irn Bru...
LOL
user, obese fucks are the best thing for US health care
They are a living breathing stream of revenue for big pharma, doctors, food producers, and anything you can consume.
ALSO they die early as fuck so they won't live long enough to collect social security.
They're also stupid and easily manipulated!
This has been scientifically proven!
Outside of ignorant horny and easily manipulated adolescents, they are the perfect consumer slave class.
it does piss me off how normal people have to drink this shit now just because fat cunts dont know how to control their selves.
>Will a sugar tax help to fight the obesity crisis?
No. Raising tobacco taxes hasn't stopped people smoking, raising alcohol tax hasn't stopped people drinking. """Sin taxes""" really don't work, you can't legislate morality, and you can't legislate health. You have to somehow """change hearts and minds""" to get it through people's fat, thick heads that guzzling flavored sugar water all day every day is BAD for them and they should stop. If you can find a way to accomplish that and patent it you'll be the richest man in the world.
based
It's not fatties' fault, user! They have a disease, you know. RCP says so.
youtube.com
Oy and vey-pilled
No but reducing the amount of money given out on food stamps should.
I don't care, fatties deserve to be poor
Did you mean to post that here, Moshe?
if you asked me a year or two ago i would've gone on some taxation is theft rant but the older you get the more and more you realize libertarianism is being in a rape dungeon and all your fellow rapies are telling the rapist how juicy your asshole is while you try to advocate that he should take up oil painting. then after you get fucked in the ass he throws some gruel in the cage and you refuse to eat it out of the principle you don't take food from guys who rape you. be like others, sell out others, fight for as much gruel as you can, get strong, bash the rapist in the head with a rock, and then take his role
No, because to compensate companies will switch sugar for artificial sugar then increase the other carb types to compensate. The calorie content wont change at all except for maybe soft drinks.
Agreed, its doing good here
No, but taxing people for being fat would.
Kill everyone in the US
True enough, but a lot of the foods that people consume that lead to excess weight gain are generally foods with high amounts of simple sugar additives like sucrose galactose HFCS etc. Most of our processed foods are engineered like this intentionally, and if we looked at nutrition at the epidemiological issue that it is in terms of the western diet, it makes sense to try and make safeguards for the wider populace.
No. Not eating that shit would also he cheaper now but people buy it anyway.
I mean maybe sales for some products would drop a bit but fat people will stay fat no matter how much you tax their coke
There's one here in Norway, recently introduced.
People buy their soda pop from Sweden to save money instead.
Crisps and biscuits are still untaxed.
I see a lot of people carrying on with their consumption of sugary goods as they've always done, so now the fat and stupid get to be fat, stupid and poor.
If it has any long run benefits, only time will tell.
wtf i support communism now
Maybe, but executing fatties for going over 35% body fat is a more elegant, and final, solution.
purity spiraling on who's fit enough will create a new era of super men
No, it's retarded. Maybe raise taxes for fat people instead.
No, the state has turn into a gigantic nanny. I already pay too much taxes and now I'm forced to pay for sugar because some fat fucks cannot stop fucking eating? How about cutting their health insurance instead? I don't see why i should suffer consequences because of others.
This. Government needs to just make life as a fatty into hell. They make money off them being lazy slobs though, which is what messes everything up.
Let's all laugh at the Anglos.
Hahahahahahahahahahaha
>wanting the corn jew to ruin everything even more
THINK ABOUT THE FARMERS! :(
Pure sugar isn't even bad for you in moderation.
Taxation isn't moral so stop falling for the jew while they tax you over anything just so they don't have to balance the budget. My state is a shitty flyover and in 3 months they went from "only a small tax on used car sales" to taxing all online purchases and doing nothing with the money as they close schools and build vanity projects.
If you want it so bad tax something that only affects a single group of people. Tax obesity medication. It won't happen because it doesn't sound "moral" but it's the same thing.
Welcome to the real world, Neo.
These are facts.
Take a look at all of the pro fat movements and my 600lb life. Those things are created to normalize obesitiy and to protect the morbid obese barron harkkonen tier hedonistic monsters.
>Butsee it isn't. And sugar right now is SO CHEAP you can fucking stuff yourself with Twinkies for $10-trivial money. What if that cost $50 or $100 instead? Would people really keep buying sugar in huge quantities?
What do you expect, a 1000% tax on everything with sugar? Thats not gonna happen, because it's retarded.
At max it would just be a small increase or do people have to pay $500 for a pack of cigarettes? And that small increase in cost will not fundamentally change peoples lifestyles.
love your body
but don't be fat
but if you are fat then it's okay
but you should try to lose weight
but only if you want to
Requesting original of this or any other versions
>"sent 'em all back to africa!"
Alcohol taxes do slow down liquor consumption, it’s very apparent in n the data
This is so fucking retarded.
Tax this, tax that. Just pull their government subsidies.
Cane sugar is at least somewhat natural, high fructose corn syrup is the devil. Corn growers get a ton in subsidies though. Keep funding the ones that grow is for cows and fuel, but just cut off funding.
It's a loop. They give them tax breaks, then tax them the difference. You're adding middlemen for so damn reason. Just costing us more money because now government idiots have to push more paper to do a +1 then -1 calculation one after another.
Just stop giving them money from the start.
Yes
Typical liberal mindset of attacking the means of a problem and not the behavior itself. The problem isn't sugar. Plenty of people are capable of living balanced, healthy lives while still enjoying dessert everyone once in a while. Those people should not be punished in any way because other people can't control themselves.
I'm not even against taxation based on being unhealthy but there are far better ways to do it. Tax people based on weight. We'd have to re-tool the BMI for this since it isn't super accurate if you're very short or very tall, but that would be a much better way to do it.
Me again. This also has the added benefit of not imposing itself on those who are already healthy as it only taxes the obese while simultaneously giving them a reward of lower taxes at the end of the tunnel in hopes it makes them change (this is the idea, no?). It also doesn't needlessly punish the companies who sell sugary products and are just trying to make a living.
Sugar tax is one of the most idiotic things to come up in this century
Not only does it obviously not work because people will fucking buy the candy if they want to eat that candy regardless if it costs a bit more or not, it's also not sugar that's responsible for today's obesity rate, it's carbs in general, and more specifically, fast food and salty shit like chips. Even the wide availability of cheap and high quality bread is more responsible for obesity than sugar is.
>sugar tax
protein causes obesity moreso than sugar, no? amino acids damage GFR which leads to bloated lymphatic stores and obesity. hello?
Tell me where I said it had failed doofus
okay sugar shill
Unironically there should be a sugar tax, saturated fat tax, alcohol tax, tobacco tax, and much more. Our society is in dire straights and close to a genetic dead end.
Just kill grain subsidies, and the price of shit will go up.
Reserve food stamps for milk, meat and vegetables only.
Boring article
cato.org
>alcohol tax, tobacco tax
there is
I know, I'm saying all those things are good and needed. Several countries have a sugar tax and some even have a saturated fat tax (Denmark was one but I recently read is may have been repealed due to corporate lobbying).
Wtf, she says in that video that she lost 8stone, and then "realized" that losing weight isn't a destination. Then got fat again (probably because she thought "Oh Im not so fat anyore, now I can eat more without feeling guilty"). Now says she didn't "choose" to be fat.
God that whole fucking video is just pseudoscience. Your body can't get fat without an excess intake of food. It's just that simple.
The problem I have with certain food taxes is that nutritional science is generally garbage. Some claim keto is best. Some claim veganism is best. Some claim paleo is best. Some claim sugar is good. Some claim sugar is bad. Some claim sat. fat is good. Some claim sat. fat is bad.
I mean even most people would say that too many grains aren't good for you, yet the gov has grains at the bottom of the food pyramid, saying that's what you should eat the most of.
Even I'm not convinced anymore that sugar is inherently bad for you, or even that we get too much of it. Since switching over to my main diet being comprised of fruits, juices, and milk, (around 500g carbs, 100g protein, 50g fat), I feel better and look better than ever.
A lot of people lump in fructose with all other sugars but I don't think that should the case according to some studies done. Fruit sugar seems to do no ill effect to health like the other forms do. That's why basically all sugar taxes exempt 100% fruit juices even though they are "high in sugar."
If normies want to eat like shit and die early why should I have to pay more for sugar?
I would say such taxes should only be instituted in countries with single-payer/socialized-medicine systems. That way people who become fat and a burden on society through medical bills should at least be paying more taxes for the junk food they buy to offset some fo the costs. Countries that have a free market for healthcare don't really need such taxes as people get all kinds of options in quality of care depending on how much you want to pay.
Taxing shit helps no body but the government to fund more stupid shit. How about actual education instead of treating the population like children and setting up artificial punishments
The US essentially has both systems though, and the megafatties eating like shit and developing expensive chronic health problems tend to also be poor or non-working, which means they qualify for Medicare and the state pays their bills
This is true. I was speaking in more of a hypothetical free market which rarely exists anymore. Especially in the US its a bastardized system that is the worst of both worlds.
