Are you referring to the widely criticized paper by Alderman that claims that lower sodium intake is associated with higher risk of myocardial infarction? Because that one has some serious flaws.

Also back in the day people had to do hard manual labor all day and needed extra salt to replenish their losses from sweating.


If the food industry influenced research on salt intake and mortality, salt would be proclaimed the most healthy thing in the world. It's cheap and tasty. Research on nutrition is very difficult to pull off properly because there are so many variables in a diet it's hard to perform rigorous studies.

It's possible that human lose salt so quickly since it's "possible" that the species went through an "aquatic ape" phase where we lived by the sea. With the abundance of salt in the ocean, it would explain why we can't hold on to it like other mammals. Plus side is that we picked up the ability to sweat, which was a ciritical adaptation when humans went to the plains, where we could then regulate our body temperature better than anything else.

average is you lose about 500mg of sodium per pound of sweat so if you weigh yourself before a workout and then after you should know how much sodium you need to consume to replenish what you lost during your work out IN ADDITION to your daily requirement of sodium which for the average person is 2000 mg
imo it's better to over eat your sodium intake than under eat if you're relatively active and don't have any heart problems
