Yes getting lean is 80% of it, but saying ab work doesn't help abs show is peak autism.
It does when youre very low bodyfat. I remember getting a 6pack in like 2 weeks of doing a lot of "sit-ups" when I was around 11. Even though I'm still skinny, I can't reproduce that now as my bf% must have been like 5% back then unironically.

Focus on "core" ie lower back and abs and be at low BF. There is more to abs than just the crunch movement, also crunches aren't really effective or good for you.
Try doing some rowing machine hard as fuck and you'll realize you don't HAVE to directly train abs.

Ok but where does typical ab work, crunches, leg raises, etc. fall under as an exercise? Once you start doing dozens of reps of these bodyweight ab exercises, is that best for hypertrophy? Can you really build strength doing BWx100 crunches?
I hate the meme that low bf% is all that is required. I have seen it on myself like I explained when I was a kid. I was extremely low bf but I didn't have an actual 6pack until I started doing ab exercises. You can see plenty of bone-skinny kids and people dying of cancer and they don't have a well-defined 6 packs.

High pulley cable crunches is the best thing you can do for core development and deep separation, period. That being said you won't have abs if you're fucking fat. If you don't train your core you will never have those 3d deep separated abs regardless of diet.
crunches are a total meme exercise. Pull ups will work out abs more than crunches/sit ups

It's a combination of genetics, prior musculature and low bodyfat, some people just don't have very naturally defined abdominal musculature and not matter how much they train abs or how lean they get, their abs will always look sub par.

I do a decent a amount of work on the rowing machine and can confirm, very good way to bump your core quickly. But you have to row hard as fuck and quite frankly it is not easy to do. Rowing machines are greatly overlooked for good full body workout.
Leglifts, abdominal vacuums and ab roller works for me.

doing any kind of core excercise is awesome for fitness. Most people are sedentary and their core is their most unfit muscle group. I would NEVER tell someone not to do crunches. usage and fitness of core is waaaaaaaay and i mean waaaay more important then caring about sixpack
