My friend has a ruptured lung

He's 16 and isn't a smoker (he used to smoke hookah). Doctors informed him that they found a rupture on his lung and that it has until Friday or Saturday to heal, after which they say a 30% success rate operation is needed. If it fails his lungs will fill with blood. They say the tear is small. He coughed a lot over the course of the week, but he seems to have nearly completely stopped these last two days. What happens if his lungs fill? Can the blood be drained out? Will he die if it fails? I'm sorry if this is the wrong board but it's the only health related board on Jow Forums I'm aware of. It's not entirely uncommon, but leaving symptoms untreated can cause it to get worse and lead to the issues he's having.

All in all though, in America it's a relatively common surgery and is easy to repair, will just require a chest tube and a lot of post surgical discomfort.

The issue is not so much that his lungs may fill with blood, but that air or blood can go in the space between the lung and the chest wall, keeping the lung from expanding. Draining the blood is no problem at a hospital, for the most part.
