Feeling Aimless in the gym?

I am feeling aimless in the gym Jow Forums. I find that I just don't know what I should be doing or have no flow or intensity. For example, I went in and did squats. Heavy for me at least. It took me about 30 minutes to do 5x5 squats. Is that normal? It felt like it took me ages. I only go to the gym for about an hour. I really need to make this hour count so I figured compound exercises is probably the best way to get the most out of hour. I do the squats and all I am thinking is.. now what? What else can I even do for legs? My legs were really tired after too. I could already feel the soreness.

I am good at following a routine but every routine I tried on here, someone drops a fact about that routine being shit. For example, I liked starting strength but then someone said "Its good if you want T-Rex legs only" which put me off. I just don't know what the fuck to do man. I need a routine that is good and is every other day rather than every day. Please help with any information. Like what even works? People say do PPL or Upper lower etc. I heard full body is good but only for beginners but its shit for intermediate lifters and and experts. I am just looking for understanding? The conflicting opinions throws me off bad.

Stop having an existential crises in the gym you overanalytical fucking yap and just lift

Jesusssss what is wrong with you fucking autists on this board mane

consistency matters way more than what program you're on. it also depends on your goals. what are you trying to accomplish? what does your body look like right now? what are you capable of doing right now? what are you working with?

when i got started i was doing starting strength with some assistance exercises and that carried me a loooong way before i had to switch to something else.

OP here. My issue is that I need the routine because it helps me.. gauge how well I am doing I guess. I just don't like going to the gym and doing whatever because then I am just a DYEL aren't I? Maybe I am a DYEL anyway... fuck. I just want to lift and progress and be better/do better. I feel like shit. Side question: Can you get a good optimum workout in with just 1 hour at the gym?

Right now I am 6 feet tall and weigh 240. However my friends all seem to think I weigh much less than that. Some say I look like I weigh 200 so I don't know where my body is putting the weight.

My squat was 315( I got injured at work and had to take about 3 weeks out of the gym so I don't know what my real max is anymore). My overhead is like 95 pounds for 3 reps or something which I think is pathetic. No idea what my dead lift is. I am still practicing the form on that.

My current goal in the gym right now is to slim down a bit. I am not too hung up about my weight because I guess its distributed in a good way. I have no pot belly and what not. A long term goal is to reach 315 squat, 1 plate overhead and... whatever the good baseline for dead lift is.

ok so you want to lose weight and look better while also getting a bit stronger. that's not really a hard goal if you're a beginner (and i'm assuming you're a beginner based on your questions).

the squat is pretty good. don't worry too much about having to take a little time off to heal from the injury, i promise you didn't lose much strength. i once had some personal problems to deal with and didn't lift for four months and i barely lost any strength (but i did get fat lol).

your overhead does kinda suck but that's a tricky fucking lift. almost everyone struggles with the OHP so don't sweat that too much. just make sure to add weight when you can and back off when you need to.

the deadlift is usually a little bit more than the squat for most people. dunno why you're having trouble with form, most people seem to get that lift down pretty quick although taller guys tend to struggle with it more. wouldn't be able to tell you how to fix that unless you can tell or show me what you're doing wrong.

how much can you bench press? and what's your diet like?

My bench is just over 115 pounds I think. Its probably more but I am particularly scared of the bench press mostly because I don't want to choke and die basically. But that is a irrational fear most likely. My diet is relatively good. I eat a lot of oatmeal and I try to just eat good natural whole foods. I try to stay away from the processed stuff. As far as my deadlift goes, I feel like I am doing it wrong because I fucked up my shins. Like I have gotten bloody shins from deadlifting which makes me feel like its wrong.

based reasonable and helpful user

I started going for an hour doing basic compound lifts and now I’m there for 2 hours doing all sorts of shit because I love it. Bro you need more energy and a fire lit in your soul. You need to think about anything turned against you in the world and lift your fucking heart through it. You need to think about seeing a girl you’re crazy over with some other guy and mogging the fuck out of him when you bump into her at the grocery store. You need to lift so fucking hard and consistently that you are top dog in the room 9.997/10 times.

also, what other exercises does being tall effect? Is 6 feet tall even tall? I feel that my squat form sucks too but mostly because I feel that going below parallel is weird when you have longer legs?

I understand what you mean but if I go in there for 2 hours.. would I even get a lot out of it? Two hours in the gym every day?! I am not familiar with the concept of over training but is such a thing possible?

you're a fucking mess, OP. Don't worry about the program, just worry about getting strong on the compound lifts. Any beginner program will get you there, SS, SL, GSLP, ICF, even PPL if progression is built in. You really only need to do 6 exercises, squat, bench, deadlift, press, chin ups, rows. Just do those and add weight each workout or each week. That's it. That's all you do. Throw in some dumbbells and machines at the end if you feel like it.

>not doing one of the best beginner strength programs because some meme Lord here jokes about t-rex legs

Well is T. rex legs true or not?

not true, SS is a good program

this
swap power cleans for rows, and add curls/tricep exercises alternating each workout

Never gonna make it

both your OHP and bench press being low means weak delts and/or triceps. make sure you're doing both the bench press and the OHP regularly and they will absolutely get better. once you lose some weight then you can move on to doing dips or if your gym has an assisted dip machine do those pronto.

as far as fear of benching goes that's just something everyone gets over eventually. if your gym has safeties for bench pressing then use them or get a spotter. most people are happy to spot you.

since you need to lose quite a bit of weight you'll probably need to start counting calories. you're going to need to do a little homework on diet if you want to be successful in your goals because the diet part is just as important as the lifting part (although continuing to stay away from processed foods is a good idea).

most guys who scrape their shins are trying to "squat" their deadlift and aren't bending over far enough. you literally do most of the work on the deadlift with your lower back but it sounds like you're mostly using your legs. also you're probably holding the bar too close to your shins at the start of the lift.

taller guys tend to have troubles with squatting and deadlifting. don't let this deter you though.

depending on where you're from yeah 6 foot is fairly tall. 5'9" is average in the states. that is assuming of course that you're actually 6 feet tall and not "yeah babe i'm 6 feet tall."

again yeah you might have a little more trouble squatting but your squat is actually pretty decent so keep that up. and yes always go to parallel or lower. ALWAYS. don't be that douche doing knee bends in the squat rack.

why chin ups over pull ups?

because they're easier and more active on the bicep, a vanity muscle. You could do pull ups too if you want. Rotating is probably best.

About the dieting thing. I don’t mind dieting but hunger really fucking crushes me. I can’t do fasting. I also need to snack frequently. Most of the time I eat like cashews or trail mix. My biggest issue though is eating breakfast. When I wake up, I feel nit hungry at all which leads to me getting to work then being hungry and eating shit. I don’t understand how people do fasting. I am so hungry sometimes.

force yourself to eat good shit in the mornings. couple of eggs and some oatmeal, maybe a little protein powder with water and there you go. a little willpower goes a long way, and a lot of willpower can change your life. get your act together and put in the work and you'll be fine.
