i've taken a hiatus from the gym for about 1.5 months now and I want to get back into the Jow Forums lifestyle but would rather do a martial art instead. What do you guys do, if any?
I was thinking boxing or muay thai but can't find any in my area.
Where the fuck do you live that you cant even find a boxing gym?
Dylan Carter
I think for yourself if you wanna get in shape fast and get the same explosiveness as an athlete I recommend boxing and a hypertrophy circuit ez shred in no time
Jason Sullivan
i do Title Boxing which is just glorified zumba. But, i like getting better at something and I like pushing myself. And ill never willingly do a squat, so its good that people will tell me to do it. I'd like to spar, but I think i'd probably like to do something more like Wrestling where you use your entire body
Connor Russell
If not boxing then taekwondo, full contact karate or wrestling is a good hoby to pick up if its available
Zachary Miller
Man you’re straight up wasting your time at a boxercise class. Just go for a run or play a teamsport instead, better yet find a non meme boxing gym.
what ever you do dont take tkd or bjj for self defense, both are a meme and WILL get you killed specially by the way your professor talks which will make you think you just gained a super power
Jordan Thompson
Sambo? Lethwei? (though i doubt many people frum burma post here)
Ethan Lopez
Would have to assume that finding a good school (i.e.e going to the country of origin and finding a good non-tourist school) makes things like kyokushin karate and muay boran somewhere above the trash tier
Daniel Brooks
Why is aikido trash? Just curious
Caleb Butler
is bjj a meme even if its just for the sake of """fitness""" and learning a martial art?
Jeremiah Powell
lots of places just have MMA gyms these days user. finding pure boxing/somewhere that won't charge you a guaranteed $500 more per month for a jits class is kind of a challenge
Lincoln Jenkins
0/10 b8 m8
Sorry your weeb interpretive dance didn't make the list honey. Maybe next century.
Cooper Sanders
>is unicycling a meme even if its just for the sake of """fitness""" and getting around town
Tyler Ortiz
This is true. I was looking for boxing gyms too. About half are fitness classes only, catering to those wanting crossfit style stuff. YMCA/PCYC type places seem like good options to try, usually they'll have at least one of boxing or kickboxing. Almost always some Judo of trad Jits.
Luis Smith
It's not a meme just because he says it is.
I could go to 4 classes a week where the class is an hour of rounds starting from the feet.
Jack Collins
>fighting on the ground on the street on pavement not on a tatami is a meme?????
Asher Foster
Using martial arts in a self defense situation is a meme.
Brody Perry
What about these: >kickboxing >taekwondo >krav maga >kendo and iaido
Gavin Lewis
That's cool, bro. Have you ever trained any martial art in your life? Because I'm guessing you've done nothing or close to it.
Parker Green
Sure it looks fun, a truly beautiful MA. Also, if you ever get in a street fight just tell him no soccer kicks and no stomps and to get in your guard.
>kickboxing very comparable to muay thai, except muay thai is better >taekwondo weeb interpretive dance >krav maga can't practically spar it >kendo and iaido do you carry a 4' bamboo sword around with you everywhere? Yes, I've actually trained all of the ones mentioned in the post and then some. You are probably a butthert bjjfag. Has its niche uses for sure, but you guys are embarrassing when it comes to standup and scrambles and have trouble against most anyone with a few months of a more well-rounded grappling art.
Judo and greco guys aren't well-rounded but from the opposite side of the grappling spectrum and they absolutely obliterate bjj from standing.
>posts another, longer meme compilation you sure got me
Brody Ward
>dude jujitsu its like a superpower gtfo joe rogan everyone is tired of your bullshit thats just catch wrestling you dumb fucking cunt which brazilian monkeys did not developed
Levi Parker
BJJ has given me endurance like nothing else I’ve ever done has. It’s amazing for fitness and is mentally stimulating. As for its purpose in self defense, no martial art will help you against multiple opponents. You’re best off running or using a gun. Any retard who dismisses BJJ because of the multiple opponents scenario are exactly that, retards. That being said in a one on one fight it will certainly help you and is great for kids to learn for anti bullying because bullies don’t train period and thus have no idea how to actually fight.
>do you carry a 4' bamboo sword around with you everywhere?
>Shit and/or LARPing
I feel sorry for you guys if you actually learn a martial art just to use it on the street or to defend yourself instead of getting fit and entertaining lmao
Adrian Robinson
>I feel sorry for I like boxing because it's fun, slammin cardio, and because it's kind of a cultural heirloom for me. It also HAPPENS to be good for self defense. That doesn't change the fact that kendo is LARPing that does some of what I listed above, just not as well AND unless you're a Dennis-tier bamboo sword carrying weeaboo you will literally never be able to use it to protect yourself
Levi Sullivan
>I feel sorry for you practicing something with its intended purpose in mind Do you know how fucking stupid you sound?
Logan Myers
Nothing is good for self defense. Good luck throwing retarded boxing punches when the other guy has a knife or a gun. If you want to defend yourself get a small pistol. You boxing and thinking you'd be able to fight anyone outside of the ring is as much larping as that retard with his ninja shit.
Cameron Phillips
"Every boxer has a plan, until he gets leg kicked/double legged."
Cooper Torres
I wonder what percent of physical altercations end up with a gun or knife being involved.
Juan Martinez
>mfw cucks think they will ever be able to match me in unarmed combat >pic related But muh blewjobjitsoo.
The ones where you get killed. Now if you just wanna pick bar fights or taunt other people, then there you go, you are a retard. If someone is not carrying something or ready to fight dirty then that fight can just be stopped before it even starts. It makes no sense to learn boxing for self defense, brother. You are not Bruce Lee, and even expert boxers get rekt in the street by normal retards.
What if you piss of the wrong guy and he comes with some friends to fuck you up? Wow you are going to pull some marvel shit on them? you gonna get assblasted.
Charles Walker
>every guy who tries to hurt you outside the ring invariably has a knife and/or gun >implying the majority of people can use a knife well enough to drop a decent boxer before they're ktfo
Colton Murphy
Shutup weak cuck, youre not tough. Ive been stabbed and shot before, all of you weak pussies that arent top 10% will be cannon fodder in the coming war. Stop wasting my time cunt.
Elijah Brooks
>barely a minute apart and using the word cuck incorrectly >being this defensive about how pathetic your line of thinking is
Anyone can stab someone with a knife. It doesn't require much science. Poor retards do it all the time. I don't think they have a phd on stabbing. I guess you are just from Canada or a gay as fuck country. It's okay, I'm jealous. I'm from a third world country and if someone comes to rob you, they're going to be armed. And if you fight you gonna die. Even if you don't die it's a stupid risk.
Who's larping now lmao Post the scars or proof with timestap bro
Christopher Edwards
Yeaaaaahhhhhhhh. Shutup bitch. Getting bullied for 12 years =/= being able to fight.
Luis Nelson
Get the fuck off my dick faggot. Maybe ill post them in a bit if I feel like it. For now? Suck it.
William Davis
>larping this hard an a Chinese cartoon discussion forum
Youre both literally speaking to a field officer tier warrior. Show some fucking respect fat anime fags.
Samuel Lee
Look at the shittier parts of town. Around me is nothing but "cardio kickboxing" but then I found a guy who fought for 17 years professionally. His gym is in some run down warehouse and is only $25 a month.
Kevin Ross
>Super special double trash tier: >aikido proof you know what you're talking about, unironically
Hunter Harris
YOUR WILL MY HAND
Connor Clark
Hey guys, I recently started boxing, but I'm sort of doing this alone and don't know my ass from my elbow.
youtube.com/watch?v=kbgkeTTSau8 I tried following this video, but I think it's a little too advanced for me. I can do the first twelve minutes okay, but the difference between a body punch and a head punch and switching between them is a little difficult for me.
If anyone knows any basic heavy bag exercises for a beginner please share them.
No martial art will prepare you for a fight. Chose an art and stick to it
Spar enough to make it realistic. Do it without breaking your body
Cameron Allen
>taekwondo Complete trash. Did it for 4 years. Just do kickboxing instead.
David Thompson
Just do muay thau instead
Justin Powell
It’s ok, as long as you do as how it was designed. As a supplement for someone with lots of judo.
Jackson Clark
Yeah, got some training for judo over the summer at a ymca. Was pretty good
James Wilson
bend your kness a lil and imagine youre hitting the guys stomach/under his elbow
Luis Martin
It is though. Ive fought multiple BJJ blackbelts and it took all of them at least 10 minutes to finally submit me. If we were actually fighting, I would have caved their heads in with punches in the first 30 seconds. Please take your shit tier MA and go
Nathan Russell
Any good martial arts for a manlets to defend himself against Chad's and tyrones.
But what if you're short
Blake Reed
>judo isn’t well rounded in comparison to wrestling Dafuq, I’ve never met a wrestler with good ground or submission work. Their top control and scramble and takedowns are great, but they aren’t well-rounded either.
Julian Hughes
Judo is great for manlets, Just do shoulder throws
This. Judo is god tier. Judo/boxing/wrestling combo is literally CQC, and what Im an expert at ;)
Brayden Adams
To put it in perspective, the double leg takedown was so effective in judo they banned it. Which wrestling are you referring to? Theres like 5 main kinds and if you don't know the difference you are frankly very ignorant about this topic.
Ryan Rodriguez
>not naming the file "rwanda rousey" You fucked up user.
Jayden Brooks
No the reason they banned it was because the ijf didn’t want judo to lose its spot as an Olympic sport, since people were saying it was too similar to wrestling. The guys I cross trained with at my uni are freestyle guys, and were very bad at avoiding chokes, armbars and locks, so I assumed that their sport prevented that shit.
Leo Sanders
>he trains at a uni >on mats >with twinks >he doesnt train in the sandbox with his fellow roided out military chad bros in 120degree weather on concrete This is why veterans smirk and laugh at fags who unironically think theyre tough because they do some "mat werk breh".
BJJ, muay thai, boxing and karate are all legit. Just make sure the karate is geared towards sparring
Christopher Bennett
how much do you make being a professional retard? the ijf took it out because it was too similar to wrestling, which was so unpopular it was going to be booted. both governing orgs have talked about this extensively. also, the double leg did not have a high a percentage success rate as you think.
Gavin Smith
That's some serious cope
Jonathan Campbell
This is a pretty good list. Self-defense wise boxing and some BJJ will really help in any self-defense situation. In my experience when some one thinks they are Ralph Macchio and throws a kick that leg is getting taken from them. Also the diffrence between Muay Thai training in Thailand and U.S. is super apparent. When I was a kid me and my dad went to a Muay Thai gym for a day on vacation. For probably an hour all they had us do was practice kicks on a metal support beam. I thought they were just fucking with us cause we were American but later on that day I saw a bunch of Thai dudes come in and do it themselves. Apparently they do it to develop knots on their shins so their kicks hurt more. In the U.S. you are basically just doing 30 second rounds on a heavy bag like any kickboxing class where its more about cardio than self-defense.
Did tkd for 14 years, taught it and competed intentionally.
Do muay thai
Connor Morgan
bjj is derived from judo, start with judo and move to bjj
Joshua Carter
whichever one you find more fun
honestly I don't know why everyone bases shit on which is best on the street, 95% of people ITT will never get into a streetfight
Wyatt Hill
>join muay thai gym in december >overweight with history in lifting, think i'll use it as cardio >miss sessions over hollidays >bad runners knee starts as soon as i get back, have to take time off >go to 2 sessions, sprain my ankle on warmup, second degree sprain, been 3 weeks and its still not fully stable >almost 2 months in and have learned nothing due to time if year and injury >finally back in the fitness groove and workouts are easy, but i've taken about 6 muay thai classes in thr 2 months my my sub >paying for 3 classes a week This is bullshit. I feel shit about it. I also feel like I dont see the same respect for injury and longevity mirrored by other people in the boxing gym, so I think i'm getting looked down on for lack of defication. Contract is a year, so I cant cancel.
Justin Kelly
Because it's better to have invested time and money into something worthwhile if the need ever arises than realise youve blown years and thousands on ethnic dancing and get your shit kicked in
Nathan Ward
>no martial art will help you against multiple opponents. WRONG
Because i've never heard of BJJ before i browsed fit/ and first thought it was some gay capoeira shit, so i'm skeptical of it, i also found some close bjj/mma gyms.
Caleb Flores
>the Olympic committee and major orgs from judo and wrestling all saying the same thing it's muh super kewl technique! ebiggg xdddd you fag
Henry Brown
I tore my acl last year and went to Thailand to train 2 weeks after the injury. I was still able to kick with the leg with the torn acl
I fractured my foot half way through december by kicking an elbow. I was in crutches for 4 weeks but I still went to my muay thai class and did some boxing sitting down whilst someone held pads for me
you're just a big fucking pussy
Lucas Baker
Everyone,
I'm planning on going to Thailand/China for a year or two to learn some sort of martial art. What do you guys suggest?
I was planning on going to China but my friend said Muay Thai is better than Kung Fuu. What do you guys suggest?
Evan Sanchez
Kung fu is a fucking joke.
Dylan Russell
Save your money and go to a local boxing gym first. Develop a base. If after 6 months of boxing you feel like you absolutely need to go to Asia to learn how to fight then knock yourself out.
