I used to get in fights a lot and bully people when I was younger but starting to box and learning what I (and others) can be capable of really humbled me and I haven't raised my voice at anyone in over five years

This for literally any martial art that's still actually martial or semi-martial. Those of us with the power to do harm have a responsibility to restrain ourselves and not abuse that power. I don't know about boxing but hitting a heavy bag is a great way to relieve stress

If you have anger issues it is not a good idea. You'd have some lethal shit literally in the palm of your hands, and you could use it without thinking if someone made you upset enough.

yeah, it's a good outlet, and you'll learn to control your emotions at the risk of punching yourself out within 2 minutes. and actually having a good trainer and sparring partners that you become friends with feels great.

Bah, boxers use big head protection things plus 16 Oz gloves, it gives you brain damage worse than being hit with a fist. Plus how much the punches slow down because of huge gloves just makes you angrier. I did Muay Thai for 2 years and that's much better

Where are all of the legit boxing gyms? All I see in my city are $200/month boxing themed cardio classes geared towards women in their 40s. Where the fuck do I go to put some real time in with a coach and everything?

It's good exercise and a lot of fun. Thay said, even light sparring is very intense at first psychologically. If ur looking to just relieve stress, avoid real sparring and treat it as a workout that teaches u how to throw a punch. It's fantastic for that, and hitting a bag is a great way to vent steam

Think of the first few months when you will get your ass handed to you, constantly. Will you be able to handle that? If so, then go for it, it gets fun as you get more skilled.

Likely they have v low exposure online. Also likely to be in rougher areas. The way to find legit training gyms is to Google good local amateur tournaments (or even pros who came from your area) and finding out what gym they trained in.

I might even threaten and shit, but there's no reason for me to escalate it. If the person shoves me or lays their hands on me, I'd come back and shove as hard as I can to make them fall to the ground, then be ready for a fight. If the fucker starts getting close I'll be ready to counter, but won't actually start hitting until the fucker starts swinging. If it's a girl I'll keep shoving and pushing (like boxing but you don't snap your punches, you stop right before it hits them then push).

If it's a guy from the streets or even an office guy who doesn't know how to fight but still throws shitty punches I will try not to knock him out, but instead make him fall down on his ass.

i mean it's always something you need to consider, but it's unlikely you'll sustain anything major. most of your time as a beginner will be spent doing drills and working on form on punching bags, conditioning, etc. And keep in mind that sparring shouldn't be full on fighting - it's TRAINING. anyone way above your skill level should not be throwing bombs at your head. Protect yourself at all times and you'll be fine

I'll also add that I was a very angry young man, and instead of boxing being a good outlet for my aggression, it just fueled it. I lived in a bad part of San Francisco and got in so many stupid fist fights over shit I could have walked away from because I knew with almost 100% certainty that I could starch whoever was antagonizing me in under 20 seconds. I'm lucky I didn't end up in prison. It took moving from SF to Montana and having a couple years of positive interactions with people for my anger to mostly subside. Your mileage may vary.
